Job Description:

The Safety Intern works directly under the Safety Officer to identify potential risks and implement procedures/placeguards to ensure employee safety. The Safety Intern is responsible for reviewing current response plans and updating when necessary while also developing new procedures to improve the workplace.

  • Implement machine guarding:
  • Define potentially hazardous operations in the machine shop area
  • Work with the employee to develop common-sense machine guarding apparatus
  • Review Company’s emergency response plan:
  • Help prepare for a fire drill
  • Review methods of response and ensure they are adequate
  • Review Radiation Safety program:
  • Research and add updated scientific information on effects of radiation dose
  • Continue to improve Lockout/Tagout program:
  • Develop visual aids for machine sources of hazardous energy
  • Research and procure additional devices as necessary
  • Conduct training for both affected and authorized personnel
  • Develop confined space program
  • Make the container safe for use
  • Train personnel
  • Develop a used oil program
  • Determine what the state and federal requirements are
  • Document the program
  • Determine what equipment is needed
  • Train employees on the program
  • Develop Hot Work Permitting program
  • Research relevant hot work topics
  • Train affected employees to be a permit issuer and fire watch
  • Develop an internal auditing program
  • Determine which topics are appropriate to audit
  • Determine which employees would be appropriate auditors
  • Train the auditors and write audit worksheets
  • Develop a Storm Water Pollution Prevention plan
  • Document and/or find drawings of building with sewer and drainage ways
  • Ensure they are not co-mingling
  • Document a plan for compliance
  • Determine if the site is built with a water backflow system
  • Necessary for compliance
  • Train employees on safe lifting habits.
  • Strengthen safety program with contractors and visitors.
  • Come up with a safety brochure for contractors/visitors
  • Help ensure compliance to corporate EH&S policies, and regulatory policies.
  • Aid in preparing for external safety and environmental audits
  • Identify areas of improvement and coordinate improvement:
  • Research and procure engineering controls and PPE
  • Implement into our systems
  • Adheres to Ultra Electronics Code of Conduct and Business Ethics Standards.

Required Skills:

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited university
  • Ability to obtain a US Government security clearance. Security clearances are granted to U.S. citizens.

Desired Skills:

  • Occupational Safety and Environmental Health Major preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willing to work independently and part of the team
  • Knowledge of OSHA and government regulations

Physical Requirements:

  • Willing to move throughout the facility
  • Visual acuity
  • Works in a temperature controlled office environment
  • Some exposure to production area based on business need
