About the Job


Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by leading the hospital’s efforts to prevent infections in our patients and staff members. This professional licensed position will have an impact on quality patient care and reimbursement by facilitating the adoption of best practices throughout the hospital, reducing patient harm while the patient is in our care and minimizing the risk to staff members.




  • Graduate of a state approved and/or accredited School of Nursing

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or relevant field. An additional four years of RN experience may be considered in lieu of the degree to be hired into the position.

  • Obtaining a BSN is required within 5 years in this role.

    Preferred: Master’s degree


    Required: At least three years of relevant nursing experience

    Preferred: Experience in infection prevention

    Other Skills/Knowledge:


  • Membership in a professional nursing organization

  • For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team


    Required: Massachusetts Registered Nurse License

    Preferred: Obtain certification in infection control (CIC) within two (2) years of hire date


    Infant, Children, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatrics


    On-call: Available to consult, generally over the phone, during non-business hours

    Schedule requirements: Generally a day position, however schedule fluctuations may be required based on patient needs and to educate alternative shifts

    Travel requirements: Expected to provide services and support to all hospital locations


  • Reports to the Manager of Infection Prevention and Employee Health

  • Does not supervise others. Leads teams/councils and may direct the work of others in that capacity.

    As part of the Employee Health and Infection Prevention team, using critical thinking and the nursing process, the Infection Prevention Specialist:

  • Reviews patient occurrences of infections and potential infection issues. Acts proactively as an infection clinical expert in the patient’s healthcare team. Provides consultation on the patient’s plan of care in order to optimize patient outcomes and minimize the chance of spreading infections.

  • Addresses outbreaks with timely action plans, acting as the central information source for and disseminator of information so patient care and other staff are properly prepared to address the threat.

  • Serves as a resource to hospital staff, physicians, patients, families, and other health care providers and facilitates effective communication between the patient, family and healthcare team in regards to infection issues. Ensures effective communication so that staff members are informed and can timely and accurately communicate infection issues to patients and family members/visitors.

  • Documents infections upon admission, assessing and documenting infections that occurred prior to admission vs. while in Winchester Hospital’s care.

  • Collaborates with other health care organizations to track and assess infection related issues.

  • Collects data and maintains accurate records of infections. Analyzes the data for trends, patterns and outliers. Recommends course of actions based on best practices.

  • Conducts chart reviews and makes recommendations based on clinical knowledge and infection control expertise.

  • Continually researches best practices, products and procedures to optimize the Hospital’s infection prevention initiatives in all departments and areas.

  • Fosters an environment of best practices using research and clinical expertise to reduce infection risks, promoting good patient outcomes and reducing the potential harm to our patients and staff.

  • Communicates effectively with the healthcare team utilizing handoff and other communication procedures. Participates in the rounding process. Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork and improve patient outcomes.

  • Demonstrates and fosters a commitment to hospital, department and unit performance improvement initiatives, goals and directives. Supports Nursing Manager(s) efforts to implement change and improve patient outcomes. Adheres to quality and safety guidelines and communicates performance and safety concerns through the appropriate chain of command.

  • Role models the Magnet standards of professional development and clinical practice.

  • Actively participates in the orientation of nurses and other hospital staff, acting as a clinical and operational resource to acclimate and train new staff members on infection prevention policies and procedures.

  • As requested, provides training and education across the hospital to ensure staff are informed and prepared to do their part to minimize and reduce infection risks.

  • In an educational capacity and due to patient needs, provides patient care.

  • Collaborates with patient placement to address infection prevention issues in a timely manner with sensitivity to patient flow and throughput.

  • Conducts spot audits and quality review surveillance of patient care areas and staff’s technique. Addresses performance improvement issues in a timely manner to foster a culture of continuous learning and a commitment to quality and safety. Actively participates in monitoring facility construction, renovation, and building integrity to limit the transmission of infections associated with these activities.

  • Maintains organizational compliance with regulatory agencies.

  • Cross covers Employee Health functions as needed.

  • Performs all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.

  • Appropriately follows the chain of command and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.

  • Communicates effectively with stakeholders in the organization to maximize the safety of our patient and staff and to ensure continuity of coverage for the Employee Health and Infection Prevention team.

  • Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork.

  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance staff satisfaction and a culture of safety.

  • Responds to supply/equipment issues in a timely manner to ensure availability of equipment and to maximize its useful life.

  • Functions effectively in crisis situations and utilizes emergency resources.
