About the Job

JOB SUMMARY :

Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by being responsible and accountable for the operational decision making for hospital operations during off-shifts. Develops and promotes collaborative and collegial relationships with physicians and interdepartmental personnel in order to enhance hospital operations and liaisons between management and the off-shift staff. This professional licensed staff position meets the highest level of professionalism consistent with a Magnet hospital.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education:

Required:

  • Graduate of a state approved and/or accredited RN program.

  • BSN

    Note: RNs that were hired prior to 10/1/13 that do not have a BSN are grandfathered.

    Preferred: MSN

    Experience :

    Required: At least three years of work experience as a nurse.

    Preferred: Critical care and/or emergency nursing and/or leadership experience.

    Other Skills/Knowledge :

    Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to function in Charge and Preceptor role.

  • IV insertion experience

  • Basic computer skills

    Preferred: Membership in professional nursing organization

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS :

    Required: Massachusetts Registered Nurse License

    Preferred: Certification in clinical specialty

    LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED :

    Required: BLS and ACLS

    P referred: PALS

    JOB FUNCTIONS:

    As part of the Patient Care Services team, this position:

  • Monitors patient census and verifies the shift has adequate staffing levels for patient care services department to promote safe patient care and ensure patient needs are met. Communicates with the Staffing Office and bed coordinator regarding census, acuity of patients, and staffing needs.

  • Facilitates patient throughput.

  • Supports staffing allocation so that patient care assignments are made and accomplished in accordance with the qualifications, skill level, and effectiveness of personnel as dictated by the complexity of patient care needs.

  • Works collaboratively with the nurse managers in the planning and implementing of patient care, staffing and performance improvement for a specific unit.

  • Communicates staff performance issues to Nurse Manager and/or Human Resources if appropriate.

  • Implements staff investigatory leave policy as necessary.

  • Ensures Mandated Nurse Overtime policy is implemented and communicates all stays to Chief Nursing Office (CNO) or Administrator on Call (AOC).

  • Fosters a climate of clinical and professional excellence.

  • Promotes patient care continuity and enhances patient throughput

  • Is the on-site lead for crisis situations for the hospital, utilizing the chain of command, contacting the appropriate hospital resources to manage the crisis for the best possible resolution. Communicates hospital crises to Administrator on Call (AOC).

  • Ensures Emergency Disaster Response Plan is implemented as necessary.

  • Communicates and collaborates with other healthcare facilities and/ or public safety agencies as needed.

  • Functions effectively in patient crisis situations. Coordinates the triage, stabilize and/or prepare patient for transport to appropriate level of care. Supports staff, patient and others as workload increases and effectively redirects staff to increase productivity in times of increased stress.

  • R esponsible and accountable for operational decision making during off-shifts throughout the hospital, overseeing staff in the performance of their duties.

  • Develops and promotes collaborative and collegial relationships with physicians and interdepartmental personnel in order to enhance patient care and patient flow.

  • Mentors, coaches, and directs personnel to ensure provision of effective and safe patient care according to established standards of care.

  • Provides performance feedback on staff directly to the staff member thus fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement and to the Nurse Manager as appropriate. Addresses patient and staff safety concerns promptly. Gives input into the performance evaluation process.

  • Ensures effective shift to shift and hand-off communications, fostering a commitment to ensure respectful feedback, enhancing teamwork.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the care provided is in keeping with established standards of nursing care, infection control guidelines; and The Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals, CMS, OSHA, Magnet and unit specific nursing professional organizations.

  • Participates in active rounding, ensuring that appropriate interdisciplinary involvement and care occurs. Collaborates and communicates with the physicians and staff as a clinical resource in addressing plan of care issues.

  • Fosters a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.

  • Fosters a culture of commitment to continual improvement of quality indicators and patient, staff and physician satisfaction goals.

  • Addresses employee and visitor workplace injuries. Facilitates reporting and communication to manager. Send staff to ED and/or home as appropriate.

  • Facilitates access to supplies and equipment required to provide patient care.

  • Monitors the department daily operation enhancing fiscally prudent operational decisions.

  • Coordinates work schedule with departmental supervisor to provide coverage and maintain safe staffing levels and charge coverage.

  • Reinforces hospital-wide strategic plans and process improvement initiatives throughout off-shift operations.

    DEPARTMENT JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Meets all applicable competencies as defined by the Director of Inpatient Patient Care Services.

  • Night Shift – Assumes the role as the IV nurse for the Hospital.
