State of Massachusetts Seasonal Activities Assistant in Waltham, Massachusetts

*Student Internship opportunities located in Group Homes operated by the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services-Metro Region* The Urban Youth Collaborative Program (UYCP) places interns in provider agencies, state-operated programs, and developmental centers across the Commonwealth in full-time summer jobs providing support to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The mission of UYCP is to increase the opportunities for young adults from multi-cultural backgrounds to explore careers in human services and gain valuable work experience while earning income to pay for college and other needs. The internship opportunity with the Department of Developmental Services will provide participants an opportunity to work alongside trained professionals in a residential setting learning how to support the needs of the individuals that we serve. The Metro Region of the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is looking for positive, compassionate Activities Assistants to schedule and coordinate events. The Activities Assistant will create and handle the logistics for daily, weekly, and monthly events in an effort to engage the people we support. They will speak to participants to get feedback, work alongside employees, and deliver fun, safe events while on time and under budget. Candidates should be detail-oriented and possess excellent interpersonal and time management skills. To succeed as an Activities Assistant, you should strive to plan entertaining, engaging activities that will appeal to the age and physical or emotional condition of the resident. You should be observant, driven, creative, and caring. _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Planning and facilitating daily, weekly, and monthly events to encourage socialization, relaxation, and recreation. * Implementing activities that accommodate all abilities. * Handling logistics to make the event possible, such as making phone calls, managing inventory, training and motivating employees. * Observing participants at events gauge their enjoyment and obtain their feedback to improve events. * Keeping records regarding event planning resources, participant interest, and other notable information, such as injuries or behavioral incidents. * Reporting medical concerns or observations. * Ensuring that events are well-provisioned, the event staff is trained and prepared, and that the event takes place on time and within budget. * Providing participants with instructions for the event. * Adhering to and enforcing all safety procedures. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a respectful, caring, tolerant, ethical, and empowering relationship with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities; * Capacity to assist/lift individuals with physical disabilities and/or limited mobility; * Aptitude to transcribe, read and comprehend the English language; _Agency Requirements:_ * Possess current and valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License * Upon successful completion of a training program, incumbents must obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid (FA) certification _Please Note:_ * This position is designated as an "EMERGENCY" position in the Department of Developmental Services Emergency Plan. This means that whenever the Governor declares that the Commonwealth is in a state of emergency, selected applicant will be required to report to work. This is a 24hour/7 days a week staff position. * Schedule: Will vary based on need of the residence Days Off: Will vary based on need of the residence * Located in Ashland, Boston, Canton, Charlestown, Dedham, Dorchester, Foxboro, Framingham, Medfield, Needham, Norfolk, Roslindale, South Boston, Walpole, Waltham, Wellesley, Westborough, Wrentham * The UYCP program begins mid-end of May through the middle of August.
