AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP PostDoc Fellow - Respiratory Therapy Area in Waltham, Massachusetts
We're currently looking for talented scientists to join our growing team developing human relevant in vitro lung models (Organ-Chips) to develop our ability to understand disease biology and enhancing the efficacy and safety of our new medicines. This exciting opportunity will allow you to gain insights into basic cellular biology, cellular cross-talk, human physiology, mechanotransduction, molecular biology and bioengineering.
As part of our innovative academic-style Postdoc program, you will take part in a comprehensive training programme, including a focus on drug discovery and development, given access to our existing Postdoctoral research, and encouraged to pursue your own independent research in the cutting edge laboratories of our partners Emulate. You’ll therefore be exposed to both a global pharmaceutical environment and to a unique innovative R&D environment working with biologists, engineers, and designers.

Targeting respiratory diseases is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED), AstraZeneca’s small molecule biotech unit that deliver candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development. The diseases of interest, including asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) represent areas of high unmet medical needs where patients have a progressive loss in lung function, impaired quality of life and ultimately may die due to respiratory failure.
Emulate works at the intersection of biology, engineering, and design, developing technologies that emulate human biology. Their products are enabling a new era of precision medicine and the development of applications for personalized health.
Emulate's Human Emulation System, which uses Organs-on-Chips technology, is being used by industry, government, and academia to understand how different diseases, medicines, chemicals and foods affect human health. The system offers researchers a new standard for predicting human response — with greater precision and control than today’s cell culture or animal-based experimental methods.
Research conducted using Emulate's Organ-Chips has been published in high-impact scientific journals, including Science. Drive and carry out characterisation of advanced cell culture models
Innovate, design and implement improvements to the models
Devise disease models, test therapeutic agents and develop biomarker assays
Plan and write high impact publications
Present data internally and at external scientific meetings
Essential requirements, education and experience:
PhD or equivalent in a relevant area
Experience of working with primary cell cultures
Experience of in vitro models of lung disease
Experience of a range of standard biological techniques such as imaging and molecular biology
Desirable requirements, education and experience:
Experience of working with microphysiological systems or co-culture in vitro systems
Skills and Capabilities required:
Demonstrable ability to work to tight timelines
Excellent written and spoken English
Proven ability to produce publications
Good communication skills at a variety of levels
Independent researcher who can also work well in teams
