- The primary function of the Personal Care Attendant is to assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living. The Personal Care Attendant works as a member of a team of professional personnel in the provision of nursing and other therapeutic services to patients in their homes. All Personal Care Attendants have been trained in methods to assist patients to achieve maximum self reliance, principles of nutrition, meal preparation, problems of illness, procedures for maintaining a clean, healthy, safe and pleasant environment. All Attendants are familiar with the policies and procedures of the agency including confidentiality and record keeping. All Personal Care Attendants must meet the Annual Federal/State twelve (12) hour in-service requirement to maintain certification.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Ambulates, positions, transfers and turns residents at a minimum of fifty (50) pounds frequently. Turns, crouches, kneels, stoops, bends below waist and reaches above shoulder height frequently. Climbs stairs frequently. Walks, sits and stands frequently. Lifts and/or carries objects at a minimum of fifty (50) pounds frequently. Pushes and/or pulls equipment at a minimum of one hundred (100) pounds frequently. Uses sight and auditory senses. Possesses good finger and hand dexterity as well as good body mechanics. Must have a genuine interest in geriatrics; must be willing to work with the realization that errors have serious consequences for clients. Patience and tact in dealing with clients, families and visitors; must have some initiative and judgment in recognizing adverse symptoms. Must project a positive attitude towards the service provided. Must use rapidity and accuracy in preparing supplies for use and accurately record periods of time, product and services.
Is at least 18 years old.
Is flexible, sensitive to the needs of others, reliable and able to cope with emergencies.
Is able to read and write English.
Able to carry out and understand direction and instruction.
Is able to document and keep records.
High school education or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory.
Successful completion of the required training program or its equivalent for Personal Care Attendant or Certified Nurse's Aide as recommended by the State of Massachusetts.
Must have experience in caring for adults, can be in a home setting or a facility.
Portuguese speaking a plus.
