State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse III Infection Control Nurse in Tewksbury, Massachusetts

Tewksbury Hospital operated by the Department of Public Health (DPH), a 370 bed Joint Commission accredited hospital, is currently seeking an experienced Infection Control RN (RN III). The opening is on the DPH Medical Units at Tewksbury Hospital but will provide hospital wide surveillance and activities for both the DPH Medical and DMH Hathorne Units. The hospital provides comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to adults with medical and/or mental illnesses. Using a customer service focus The Infection Control Nurse will utilize epidemiologic principles to conduct surveillance and investigations of healthcare associated infections for a patient population of adults 18 – 100 years of age. They will collect data relative to the delivery of nursing care to patients; identify problems, collect input for resolution, prepare reports and conduct ongoing assessments. Assures compliance with standards of regulatory agencies. This position works 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, from 6:45am to 3:15pm Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): * Assist with implementation of infection prevention and control policies and protocols. * Conduct Hospital–wide surveillance (DPH and DMH) of healthcare associated infections, hand hygiene, PPE, donning/doffing of PPE, adherence to Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures. * Provide oversight and coordination for the Hospital’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program including but not limited to tracking necessary PPE, ensuring an adequate inventory, recommend appropriate PPE per PPE Grid, distribution of PPE, management of donning and doffing stations, and education of staff relative to evidence-based infection control practices. * Observe clinical practice for mandatory current standards of clinical practice and reports issues to the Infection Control Preventionist. * Conduct environmental surveillance rounds in all hospital departments twice per year (more often as needed) for compliance or when necessary for departmental or hospital-wide Infection Prevention policies and procedures. * Documents deficiencies and provides Department Supervisors and the Infection Preventionist with the findings. * Assist in preparing reports and statistical data for the infection control committee, medical staff committees, medical executive committee and the facility's administration and other committees as needed. * Monitor Meditech for patient assessment and care plans as they pertain to Infection Prevention. * Communicate infection prevention and control information and data to various committees and healthcare workers across the organization as assigned. * Assess and address learning needs of staff and patients with respect to Infection Prevention and Control. * Provide education to all hospital employees at orientation, annually and just in time training, about current infection prevention and control policies and procedures, the Respiratory Protection Program and the Exposure Control Plan as assigned. * Comply with regulatory and mandatory reporting requirements at the local, state and federal levels. * Utilize PI methodology as a means of enacting change. * Participate in PI committees, teams and initiatives as indicated. * Stay current on infection prevention and control regulatory and accreditation standards. * Attend continuing education programs to maintain current knowledge as required for licensure and infection prevention and control knowledge. * Compile appropriate reports for Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Nursing Quality Council, Hospital Quality Management on a monthly basis as assigned. * Comply with all applicable state and federal laws including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations governing the privacy and confidentiality of information about patients.
