State of Massachusetts Psychiatrist Specialist in Tewksbury, Massachusetts

Tewksbury Hospital under the Department of Public Health (DPH), a 370 bed Joint Commission accredited hospital, is currently hiring for the position of Psychiatrist Specialist. The hospital provides a broad treatment of care and comfort to adults with medical and/or mental illnesses. The primary role of the C/L Psychiatric Consultative Service/Psychiatrist Specialist is to oversee clinical psychiatric, psychological and academic activities within the Department of Medicine. The Psychiatrist Specialist also has clinical responsibilities including managing patients by performing, reviewing or directing appropriate psychiatric history and examinations in order to diagnose and manage patients in inpatient settings.Provides psychopharmacology evaluations and ongoing management as indicated for a caseloadofmedical patients who have psychiatric co-morbidities. Performs ongoing reviews for the courts around need for guardianships and DPH eligibility and disability evaluations. The basic purpose of this work is to provide psychiatry consultative services, with emphasis on psychopharmacology. Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, 8:30am – 5:00pm, Saturday and Sunday off. _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Performs psychiatric evaluations of patients on medical inpatient units. Orders appropriate laboratory andother diagnostic tests, including Neuropsychological testing. Formulates psychopharmacological treatment and behavioral plans. * Prescribes or recommends medications to help control symptoms and improve psychosocial and vocational functioning to enable patients to reach their full potential and to fully integrate and become more functional members of their community. * Participates in collaborative psychopharmacology practice with advanced practice nurses who have prescriptive authority. Meets mandated supervision requirements. * Collaborates with other hospital staff in the comprehensive treatment of patients who are receiving multiple behavioral health and medical services. * Facilitates the treatment and care of patients by engaging in leadership activities in interdisciplinary teams that coordinate efforts to provide services. * Writes medications, restraints, and suicide precautions orders. * Assess patients’ competency, in order to make decisions regarding treatment, guardianships, child custody, and psychiatric disability. * Provides evaluations for social security disability and guardianship proceedings; completes relevant documentation in a timely manner. * Maintains accurate patient records by organizing data concerning patient history, onset of symptoms, progress of treatment, and reviews such records for accuracy and completeness. * Instructs students, residents, and other professionals in the practice of psychiatry. * Attends staff meetings, lectures, seminars, educational forums, and meetings of professional and community organizations to facilitate the exchange of information about behavioral health treatment. * Establishes and maintains ongoing communication with patients’ primary care and other health care providers to achieve integrated behavioral health and medical care. * Acts as a liaison to other programs and provides care to special populations with behavioral health needs, such as patients with substance use disorders, dual diagnoses, the elderly, homeless individuals and developmentally disabled clients. * Complies with Hospital policies and procedures and Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and ethics of medical practice. * Conducts meetings to exchange information, formulates policies, provides consultation, and resolves problems. * May provide individual and group psychotherapy. * Participates in hospital and department committees. _Required Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment methods and techniques used in the field of behavioral health and psychopharmacology clinical practice. * Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of psychiatry. * Knowledge of treatment methods and techniques used in the field of Psychiatry. * Knowledge of the types and characteristics of medications used in providing behavioral health care. * Knowledge of a broad range of clinical interviewing techniques. * Knowledge of the types and availability of public or private organizations and sources for providing/coordinating behavioral health care. * Ability to effectively interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. * Ability to understand and apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing clinical activities in behavioral health services. * Ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful or emergency situations. * Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision. _About Tewksbury Hospital:_ Tewksbury Hospital offers a broad range of services including a physician on site at all times, around-the-clock nursing care, rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, psychology services, social services, nutritional services, and an on-site dialysis clinic.
