State of Massachusetts Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Tewksbury, Massachusetts

Tewksbury Hospital under the Department of Public Health (DPH), a 370 bed Joint Commission accredited hospital, is currently hiring for the position of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The hospital provides a broad treatment of care and comfort to adults with medical and/or mental illnesses. The primary role of the of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner///is to provide psychiatric services, with emphasis on psychopharmacology, for medical inpatients at Tewksbury Hospital. A psychiatric nurse practitioner performs psychiatric consultation and urgent diagnostic evaluations for medical inpatients in Tewksbury Hospital; provides psychopharmacologic evaluations and ongoing consultative management for a caseload of patients who are medically ill, with co-occurring mental illness, addiction disorders, developmental disability and other special needs populations. The incumbent maintains clinical records; collaborates in developing treatment plans; and performs related work as required./ /The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner performs ongoing reviews, affidavits and necessary documentation for guardianships, DMH eligibility and disability evaluations as required by the Courts and other agencies in compliance with the timeframes required by those entities./ Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, 9:00am – 5:30pm, Saturday and Sunday off. _Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Upon receipt of consultation request, performs psychiatric evaluations for patients on public health inpatient units. May order laboratory and other diagnostic tests; evaluates results to determine the nature and extent of any mental health or other behavioral disorder; and formulates a plan for psychopharmacological treatment; communicates these directly to the requesting physician. * Prescribes or recommends medications to treat mental illness and improve psychosocial and vocational functioning to enable patients to reach their full potential to fully integrate and become more functional members of their community. * Assesses patient's capacity for informed consent for any prescribed medications and takes appropriate legal action for patients where capacity is in question. * Seeks collaborative consultation with DPH Psychiatrist for challenging and/or complicated cases. * Collaborates with other staff in the comprehensive treatment of patients who are receiving multiple behavioral health and medical services. * Facilitates the treatment and care of inpatients by engaging in leadership activities in interdisciplinary teams that coordinate efforts to provide services. * Facilitates the safe management and care of inpatients manifesting assaultive/abusive behaviors. * Responds to psychiatric emergencies in the DPH areas of the hospital. * Consults with legal personnel regarding patients' competency to accept or refuse proposed treatments, need for guardianships. * Provides evaluations for disability and guardianship proceedings in a timely manner as required. * Maintains accurate patient records only in the accepted TSH format by organizing data concerning patients' history, onset of symptoms, progress of treatment, and reviews such records for accuracy and completeness. * Integrates current psychopharmacology literature and research into clinical practice. Reads medical/psychiatric literature on medications and consults psychiatric and medical textbooks to conduct the most current medically and psychiatrically sound psychopharmacology practice possible. * Attends staff meetings, lectures, seminars, educational forums, and meetings of professional and community organizations to facilitate the exchange of information about behavioral health treatment. * Establishes and maintains ongoing communication with patients' attending physicians, primary care, and other health care providers to achieve integrated behavioral health and medical care. * Attends meetings or conferences to exchange information, formulates policies, provides consultation, and resolves problems. * Provides clinical consultation to interdisciplinary health providers. * Uses standard hospital mechanisms for communication of all TSH related-issues, including patientinformation by using the state-mail system. * Participates in Physician Compliance Education coding, medical record documentation and Meditech processes. * Completes monthly Time and Effort studies per CMS regulation(s). * Refrain from any professional billing at TSH for services provided other than that associated with Tewksbury Hospital Physicians Group. _Required Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of psychiatry. * Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment methods and techniques used in the field of behavioral health and psychopharmacology clinical practice. * Knowledge of the types and characteristics of drugs used in providing behavioral health care. * Knowledge of a broad range of clinical interviewing techniques. * Knowledge of the factors, trends and problems in providing behavioral health services to urban, under-served, complex, culturally diverse medical inpatients. * Knowledge of the social and economic problems of minorities and disadvantaged individuals. * Ability to establish rapport with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. * Ability to effectively interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. _About Tewksbury Hospital:_ Tewksbury Hospital offers a broad range of services including a physician on site at all times, around-the-clock nursing care, rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, psychology services, social services, nutritional services, and an on-site dialysis clinic.
