State of Massachusetts Licensed Practical Nurse II in Taunton State Hospital, Massachusetts

Provides direct supervision to LPN’s and MHW’s in the performance of patient care, to ensure optimal care for the patients. Exercises leadership by coordinating ward duties of LPN’s and MHW’2 by providing guidance and direction, communicating problems to supervisor, making assignments, accepting and giving verbal and written reports, assisting with programs from other departments in order to provide quality care. During tour of duty, ensures timely administration of medication according to TSH policy and procedures. Participates in medical care by carrying out prescribed physician’s orders and nursing care plans on a daily basis following individual treatment plans and hospital policy to ensure that optimum medical status is maintained. Documents any behavioral & medical observations in client’s charts & reports all relevant information to charge nurse. Participates in therapeutic interaction with clients on a continuing basis to allay fears, aid in assessment and ensure safety of clients and staff on a daily basis. Applies principles of psychiatric nursing care on a daily basis when assessing client’s needs, contributing to staff discussions re: care, participates in meetings and cooperates with others in order to provide consistent client care. Continually demonstrates ability to assist in crisis intervention by developing skills in working with clients and staff in management of dangerous situations so that safety of clients and staff is provided. Demonstrates the development of abilities to perform nursing tasks by participating in procedural work including admissions, discharges, safety checks, fire drills, supervision of visits, collection of specimen, recording vital data, using hospital policy in order to provide optimum care and safety in a therapeutic environment. Participates in daily health and hygiene of clients by supervising and assisting as necessary with nutrition, bathing, dressing, physical exercise and participation in other activities of daily living, cleanliness of living quarters so that basic needs are met. Provides nursing care to the patient with respect to their needs as defined by the specific age population served. Assist in their physical and mental well being to help promote independent ADL functioning through assessment, problem identification, planning, implementation, teaching and ongoing evaluation. Applies principles of psychiatric nursing care when interacting therapeutically with clients while assessing needs, discussing care, allaying fears & anxieties to help provide a total therapeutic environment. Is a responder to crisis situations & is able to initiate emergency care while working closely with other team members. Participates in daily care of clients while assisting, teaching & providing leadership to staff in lower classification on a monthly basis.

2nd shift: 2:45 pm - 11:15 pm

Week 1 - Monday and Saturday

Week 2 - Sunday and Friday

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) is a 45-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model. Applicants must have at least one year of paraprofessional experience in the field of nursing as a licensed practical nurse.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid license as a practical nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
