State of Massachusetts Licensed Practical Nurse I - Seasonal Position in Taunton State Hospital, Massachusetts
This is a "Seasonal Position”. Seasonal positions are at a minimum of 90 days in duration. Expected to start between May 1, 2018 and June 1, 2018 and will end by mid-September 2018.
Hours: 6:45 am- 3:15 pm (Full time 40 hours)
Days Off: Week 1: Tuesday and Saturday; Week 2: Sunday and Thursday
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides total nursing care and serves as the primary teacher for medication issues & groups. Administers medication following proper policy & procedures. Serves as a role model & provides leadership to staff in lower classifications.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Follows hospital operational protocols and procedures to ensure timely administration of medication, transcribing orders, obtains medication from pharmacy, records accurately on medication administration record.
Follows hospital protocols while providing nursing care to patients, carrying out physician’s orders, nursing care plans & individual treatment plans.
Documents any behavioral & medical observations in client's charts & reports all relevant information to charge nurse in a timely manner.
Applies principles of psychiatric nursing care when interacting therapeutically with clients while assessing needs, discussing care, allaying fears & anxieties to help provide a total therapeutic environment.
Is a responder to crisis situations & is able to initiate emergency care while working closely with other team members.
Oversees the maintenance of a safe, secure and therapeutic ward environment.
Participates in daily care of clients while assisting, teaching & providing leadership to staff in lower classification.
Gains skills needed to provide Patient Centered Care in a Recovery Model by attending all mandatory trainings and participating in on unit educational opportunites.
Documents in medical record pertinent information following policies and protocols to communicate patient needs and status.
Ensures that optimum quality care is provided on a daily basis by serving as client advocates, ensuring patient confidentiality & maintaining the human rights of all patients.
Attends mandatory annual classes & participates in educational opportunities to promote personal & professional development.
Participates in medication teaching groups and provides clients with all necessary information related to health care issues.
Demonstrates the ability to use effective crisis intervention tools to include prevention, de- escalation, and debriefing.
Demonstrates responsibility regarding punctuality and attendance to ensure staff is available to deliver nursing care.
Receives the 24 hour ward report with the offgoing medication nurse and the oncoming charge nurse when reporting for duty taking particular note of medication issues and consulting with the charge nurse.
Exercises functional supervision of MHW ‘s to provide instruction and guidance on a daily basis.
Responds positively to supervision and is self motivated and thorough in reporting and documenting for special procedures, response to treatment and in assessment skills on a daily basis when caring for all clients.
Demonstrates positive peer interaction and support along with initiative and independence with tasks not assigned, as is a role model for subordinate staff.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the age related and cultural needs of the clients/patients served.
Demonstrates knowledge of R&S reduction principles such as prevention, de-escalation and debriefing.
Demonstrates initiative and motivation in bringing the latest trends in mental health care to the clients of TSH utilizing information obtained in the educational opportunities provided by DMH.
Maintains med room according to established guidelines.
Orders supplies from med clinic weekly to maintain unit stock of medical items.
Assures that all physician orders meet established criteria prior to accepting and transcribing them utilizing the RN if needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) is a 45-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model. The hospital is a part of the Southeast Area of the Department of Mental Health which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients’ discharge back to the community.
