State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse IV - Nurse Educator in Taunton, Massachusetts

Taunton State Hospital is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Nurse Educator (Registered Nurse IV). The selected candidate provides nursing care to adult psychiatric patients. Oversees, develops, coordinates, and tracks educational activities for nursing staff and other disciplines, including orientation, mandatory annual trainings and training activities designed to improve performance and meet regulatory guidelines. Collaborates with Executive Nurse, Learning and Development Staff, and Nurse Managers and Supervisors to ensure staff competencies in providing person-centered, trauma- informed, recovery-focused care for all patients. Acts as liaison for nursing schools and nursing students on the DMH units. Please note: The incumbent will work primarily on first shift from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a flexible schedule to work off shifts. The days off are Sunday and Saturday. _Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive)_: * Provides nursing care to adult psychiatric patients by assessing their health and mental health status, recording related data (including entering patient information into the Electronic Health Record System/s), administering treatment and medications. * Supervises, oversees, and coordinates staff development activities across shifts, by teaching or assigning classes to appropriate Training staff, coordinating and scheduling mandatory training classes, and providing encouragement and support to TSH staff in completing required classes, competencies and/or corrective action plans on paper and via Mass Achieve/MyPath. * Collaborates with the DON and other TSH Administrators, Office of Inpatient Management, and Learning and Development staff in the identification of educational needs of TSH Nursing Staff and serves as an educational resource to assist in and promote the development of nursing students and staff members. * Reviews educational materials to ensure they meet current standards and training needs, consults with OIM as appropriate, observes the teaching of others, demonstrates presentation skills, and independently follows through on educational objectives. * Maintains updated and accurate records of teaching activities and plans, required training, annual competencies, and designated annual tasks for all TSH staff and nursing students. * Coordinates and oversees staff development activities, and accurately schedules staff for required training, communicating the schedules and attendance at these programs to trainers/educators, nurse managers, supervisors, staff assigned, and DON as applicable. * Supervises, oversees, and participates in new employee orientation, providing detailed feedback regarding job performance to Nurse Managers, Supervisors and DON. * Submits required and requested reports and status updates of training activities and staff compliance with required tasks to DON, designated committees, and as assigned. * Coordinates with DON, Nursing school representatives and Instructors to orient nursing students to TSH, and support nursing students with completing their clinical rotation at TSH. * Promotes evidence-based practices and the highest quality standards of nursing care, Promotes an environment of trauma-informed care and the use of least restrictive interventions. * Provides counseling to individual staff members in an empathetic and thorough manner as needed and communicates issues to Nurse Manager. Serves as an administrative role model and resource in the process of resolving individual unit or hospital issues and initiates initial disciplinary action for staff as needed in a clear, calm manner which follows the established rules and regulations. * Responds to, assesses, participates in, and evaluates all emergency response activities involving nursing staff in order to ensure patient and staff safety, and communicates with the TSH COO, TSH Director of Nursing, AOC, and/or designee in a timely manner as appropriate. * Oversees completion of required documentation (e.g., Restraint/Seclusion documentation and debriefing, IA packets, Incident Reports, fall assessments, medication occurrence reports, etc.) in a timely manner and provides remedial instruction to staff if needed. * Audits documentation (e.g., precautions, fall, behavioral change, incident, R/S) to ensure it is properly completed by an RN. * Ensures appropriate reporting, documentation and follow-up of administrative issues and nursing concerns and performs initial investigation of incidents and accidents that occur to patients or staff while ensuring proper care is given. * Serves as a resource in the clinical management of patients by following all policies and procedures and assisting nursing staff in identifying and utilizing inter and intradepartmental resources to promote highest quality, effective, efficient nursing care. * Participates in appropriate committees or activities that formulate nursing and/or hospital policies and procedures including those that refer to staff development and training and that review quality management issues. * Participates in hospital and performance improvement efforts including data collection; identifies training needs based on data, informs DON and Nursing Leaders of activities and makes recommendations for PI driven trainings. * Adheres to hospital policy regarding confidentiality of patient and personnel information. * Performs other duties as assigned. _Preferred Qualifications_/:/ * Teaching and supervisory experience in a psychiatric/ mental health setting is preferred. * Demonstrated leadership/managerial skills, including interpersonal competence and organizational skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office (e.g. Power Point, Excel and Word) and computer-based learning are preferred qualifications. * Annual attendance for re-certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and MANDT program. * Must complete all mandatory training electronically, in writing or when assigned to a class. * Prior experience preferred. * Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency. __ _License and/or Certification Requirements:_ * Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. _About Taunton State Hospital_ Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 45-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses.
