Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by drawing blood from patients and collecting and documenting specimens based on physician orders. This clinical staff position is the face of the lab and their effort starts the whole laboratory process, providing phlebotomy draws with attention to patient comfort and the physician orders. Timely and accurate processing and documentation of the specimens impact the entire laboratory process.

JOB FUNCTIONS

As part of the Laboratory team, this position:

  • Registers patients. Enters physician orders.

  • Prepares the patient, verifies identification and physician orders, draws blood with attention to patient comfort, and labels specimen accurately with essential information.

  • Receives, and packs specimens, expediting the delivery process for lab processing.

  • Documents receipt of specimens in electronic medical record system.

  • Runs daily reports and addresses issues as pertinent.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Off-sites:

  • Orders supplies maintaining adequate supplies given limited space and stocking supplies

  • Open and close facilities ensure security measures are followed.

  • May perform EKGs, depending on site.

  • Hospital:

  • Conducts draws and specimen retrievals in patient rooms, the emergency department and other hospital departments.

  • Delivers specimens, ensuring timely delivery for lab processing.

  • Stocks supplies

  • Home Visits

  • Travel to the patient, providing their own transportation.

  • Communicates any patient related concerns to the Phlebotomy Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education :

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience :

  • Required: Phlebotomy experience or certification.

  • Preferred: At least one year of clerical or secretarial experience.

Other Skills/Knowledge :

  • Required: For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS :

  • Preferred: Phlebotomy certification

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: N/A

POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Infant, Children, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS :

  • On-call: Optional

  • Schedule requirements: Required to regularly rotate through weekends and holiday shifts according to department schedule.

  • Travel requirements: Travels to patient care units, off sites, patient homes, and community outreach events depending on primary location and as requested.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to Phlebotomy Coordinator.

  • Not responsible for supervising the work of others.
