Baystate Health OB Ultrasonographer in Springfield, Massachusetts

Summary

Performs maternal-fetal medicine high-risk obstetric ultrasounds working with on-site perinatologists to include: first trimester ultrasounds, detailed anatomy level one & level two ultrasounds in the second and third trimester, transvaginal ultrasounds, maternal and fetal Doppler studies, BPP, and 3D ultrasounds. Ultrasounds on patients with high BMI in pregnancy, scanning multiples, Fetal Echocardiography, and Nuchal Translucency/Nasal Bone are within the scope of this sonographer.

Performs procedures including ultrasound-guided amniocentesis/CVS by following and verifying referring providers' orders. Uses independent judgment and applies learned methodologies according to established policies and procedures.

Educates patients/families regarding procedure and/or treatment to be performed. Demonstrates professional behavior/conduct in all interactions; fosters teamwork, efficient use of resources, and quality patient outcomes.

Produces high-quality images and prepares/presents them with other pertinent patient information for timely interpretation. Prepares and maintains accurate documentation.

Demonstrates competence in performing prescribed invasive/interventional procedures if applicable in accordance with established policies if applicable.

Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements. Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot and notify appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance. Maintains a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors. Adheres to safety policies.

Accountable for the ethical, legal, professional, and certification responsibilities related to the practice. This includes maintaining the confidentiality of all work information.

Assures the efficient operation of the workflow of the department. Monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials to ensure non-interruption of services.

Independently performs procedures in accordance with department/facility policies and guidelines. Internal customers: All levels of medical imaging and nursing management and staff, medical staff, and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. External Customers: regulatory and health agencies, patients, and family members.

Assists in the operating room for fetal procedures. Adheres to system and department compliance policies, and all applicable laws and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

1) Demonstrates excellent customer service through positive patient experience; promotes positive inter/intradepartmental communications and relationships; maintains confidentiality.

2) With guidance and supervision from the lead sonographer, operate ultrasound equipment, adjust controls according to the organ to be examined, depth of field, and other test specifications to obtain a medical diagnosis with the use of appropriate acoustical parameters and in accordance with accepted protocols. Performs technical procedures which may include one or more of the following: abdominal, OB/GYN, and trans-vaginal ultrasounds.

3) Maintains knowledge of procedures/protocols applies knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and can identify pathology, within the scope of practice to obtain necessary diagnostic information. Responsible for independent and proficient operation of all assigned imaging equipment in area of specialty to provide the best image outcomes in a proficient and time-sensitive manner.

4) Properly identifies patient information using two patient identifiers and complies with National Patient Safety Goals standards. Performs procedures as outlined including but not limited to routine, specialized, emergency, and urgent imaging procedures. Responsible for providing accurate, high-quality exams.

5) Maintains operational communication with supervisor and manager; shares information and follows through with assigned tasks.

6) Works as a member of the health care team including physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals in diagnostic testing.

7) Operates and maintains exam room and equipment, evaluates equipment problems, and takes appropriate action to expedite necessary service or repair. Demonstrates knowledge/understanding in effectively operating all equipment. Performs quality checks on equipment in accordance with departmental procedures. Keeps work areas stocked with appropriate supplies. Keeps all imaging rooms neat and clean. Ensures supplies in work area are not damaged or outdated. Discards waste in appropriate waste containers according to established procedures.

8) Recognizes examination findings that may require immediate clinical response and notifies the MFM or Reproductive Endocrinologist provider and verifies timely transfer of images to the AS Software system.

9) Assures ongoing compliance with JC, MQSA, and ACR regulatory and DPH/CMS requirements. Participates in departmental quality assurance activities. Supports QC activities in the department.

10) Performs accurate and high-quality exams to ensure proper technique, positioning, and visualization of the appropriate anatomy requested. Instruct patient before and during the procedure to maximize the probability of obtaining a complete and accurate result.

11) Maintains standards of skills demonstrates/maintains current knowledge/skill in providing appropriate care for all patients potentially served in an imaging service, including pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

12) Always presents self to all patients and other customers in a pleasant, professional, and courteous manner.

13) Attends and participates in in-service meetings and other designated training events that will enhance clinical skills as documented by attendance at meetings/seminars.

14) Reports any suggestions for positive changes or recommendations within departmental policies/procedures to the supervisor.

15) Accurately inputs data, demographics, and information into appropriate modality specific computer applications and systems.

16) Assists in the training of technologists, residents, and students when assigned to same work area according to departmental procedures, where applicable. Demonstrates a willingness to learn new procedures and accept new responsibilities.

17) Observes strict safety standards in the area of specialty, ensuring the safety of patients, family members, staff, and visitors. Maintains an environment that is free of hazards.

18) Utilizes time in an effective manner by coordinating patients and procedures to achieve maximum productivity as observed by the supervisor.

19) Assist the OB/GYN provider in a wide range of sterile procedures, as dictated by modality.

23) Uses independent judgment and applies learned methodologies according to established policies and procedures.

25) Maintain AIUM standards of practice and AIUM standards on patient safety.

26) Must be able to travel to satellite locations

Required Education

Completion of an accredited program in Medical Ultrasound

Required Experience

If ARDMS is not held when hired, it must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.

Within one year needs to be certified in 1st Trimester Screenings (in addition to having the ARDMS in OB-GYN)

Within two years of hire, needs to be registered in Fetal Echocardiogram (in addition to having ARDMS in OB-GYN)

Maintain all skills with certification on an ongoing basis

Preferred Experience

Has two (2) or greater years of experience and holds ARDMS in OB.

Skills/Competencies

Able to work with computer applications. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication. Able to work independently and be self-motivated.
