Baystate Health EMS Communication Spec in Springfield, Massachusetts

Summary:

The EMS Communication Specialist provides skills and abilities to enhance patient care and clinical quality in a busy, dynamic emergency department and trauma center. In addition to having excellent communication skills and the ability to organize and prioritize, the EMS Communication Specialist will: (1) possess a MA EMT-paramedic license, (2) have experience in pre-hospital care, (3) be expert in judging the clinical acuity of patients arriving by EMS based on a radio notification, (4) know pre-hospital point-of-entry criteria, including trauma, STEMI and stroke activation criteria, (5) know a wide range of emergency department operational processes, (6) work with nursing to achieve optimal placement of patients arriving by ambulance, (7) acquire information and maintain records, (8) monitor communications for quality improvement, (9) communicate with outside facilities and agencies, (10) protect confidentiality and (11) use a variety of communication technology and computer software applications.

Job Responsibilities:

1) Works in the emergency department communication/command center and receives all notifications of incoming ambulances, either through CMED or telephone, as well as patient expect notifications from other facilities or medical practices. Coordinates Baystate Medical Center's communications with EMS agencies, public safety agencies, other hospitals and CMED during disasters or major incidents.

2) Responsible for knowing and maintaining knowledge of Baystate Medical Center and pre-hospital point-of-entry criteria including, but not limited to, trauma, STEMI and stroke. Activates specialty response teams according to internal criteria.

3) Possesses strong knowledge of pre-hospital clinical care standards and monitors communications as part of the hospital's EMS quality improvement process. Flags cases for review and forwards to the EMS Coordinator or EMS Medical Director. Monitors for, and records quality data as deemed necessary by the EMS Coordinator or EMS Medical Director

5) Maintains a written record of all patient expect notifications coming from other facilities including: name of referring facility or referring physician, patient name, time of notification, time of arrival, method of arrival, clinical information and other data as deemed necessary by the emergency department administration

7) Receives and processes medical documents and fax communications from EMS and outside facilities or medical practices

8) Adheres strictly to all confidentially requirements associated with medical records and quality improvement matters

9) Functions as primary communication point between the emergency department and outside EMS and public safety dispatch centers in matters pertaining to day-to-day operations

10) Refers to written policies, processes and standards when needed for guidance in making decisions

11) Troubleshoots CMED problems and contact appropriate technical resources when necessary

12) Learns relevant emergency department processes, patient flow dynamics and clinical acuity criteria.

13) Works to promote effective clinical communications between EMS providers and the emergency department

14) Acquires additional knowledge and skills when necessary to meet the needs of a dynamic operation.

15) Accepts additional tasks or functions when necessary to meet the needs of a dynamic operation.

Required Work Experience:

1) 1 year of pre-hospital care at the paramedic level

Preferred Work Experience:

1) 5 years of pre-hospital care at the paramedic level

Skills and Competencies:

1) Requires effective verbal and written communication skills through various media including telephone, radio and e-mail

2) Requires fundamental computer skills and must quickly gain proficiency in the use of numerous software applications used by the emergency department

3) Requires the ability to organize and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment

4) Requires the ability to use Baystate's telephone system to hold calls, transfer calls or operate multiple lines

Associate of Arts, GED or HiSET (Required)

Certifications:

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Paramedic - Other, NIMS ICS 700 Certified - FEMA Federal Emergency Management Institute
