Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Team Leader starts with basis of charge nurse description and includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrates clinical expertise through excellent assessment of physical, mental and psychological patients using age-appropriate knowledge to ensure care standards are met for Critical Care patients.

  • Plans, evaluates and supervises care for all patients within the Critical Care Center and others as assigned by applying hospital standards in the areas of service, team work, communication, respect for others and time/priority management.

  • Consistently models effective interpersonal and leadership skills necessary to promote effective collaborative working relationships with all members of the healthcare team to provide excellent service to patients served.

  • Coordinates and participates in formal and informal educational programs, in-services and performance improvement activities to improve technical skills within and outside of specialty area.

  • Responsible for continued learning and application to practice within and outside of specialty area demonstrating sound judgment and critical thinking skills.

  • Responsible for providing patient and family education and updates to population served.

  • Maintain skills necessary to assist with augmentation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures. Demonstrates practice that reflects philosophy, purpose and policies of the hospital and department based upon evidence based best practices and AACN standards.

  • Collaborates and demonstrates interpersonal leadership skills with physician, midlevel providers, specialists, all inpatient/outpatient nursing units, admitting, supervisors and all health care team members promoting successful communication that is patient centered.

  • Demonstrates the ability to deal effectively with stress relating to the changing organizational environment, personnel and patient care issues.

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary departments to facilitate flow of patients out of the department in a timely fashion. Actively engage staff to facilitate an expedited flow of patients into their admission beds.

  • Meets and collaborates with the UBE to mentor and report on progress of new hires.

  • Participates in the assessment of staff performance, in collaboration with the Director and the Manager, through contribution to individual staff performance reviews.

  • Regulatory Readiness - crash carts checked, refrigerator checked, ensure equipment does not black egress of fire extinguishers, completes survey readiness checklists.

  • Maintains listing of materials and equipment and updates staff on any repair and follow-ups. Checks supply inventory for expiration dates at least twice per year.

  • Assures inventory is performed on all specialty carts, and equipment.

  • Ensures all live documentation is complete and appropriate leadership/agencies notified by performing live audits, including but not limited to STEMI, Code Stroke, Sepsis, SI, Restraints, and falls.

  • Round with patients and families to ensure service standards are being met adequately, and develop a plan for service recovery if necessary. Assist with departmental changes to improve overall service.

  • Chart Audits (electronic and paper medical record), with real time education to support and improve all documentation.

  • Attends 90% of the Team Leader team meetings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BSN; OR other advance degree considered; OR current enrollment in BSN program with completion within 1 year of hire into team lead position

  • Charge experience required

  • Minimum of 2 year’s RN experience in Critical Care environment required

  • AHABLS and/or ACLS required

  • Department specific certification (CCRN) obtained within 6 months of hire into Team Lead position

  • Current MA RN License required
