Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

Treatment Planning and Delivery:

  • Accurately delivers the prescribed course of radiation therapy as directed by the physician’s written prescription and approved treatment plan.

  • Maintains safe patient care as per departmental policies and guidelines including but not limited to patient identification, assisting patient to and from treatment room, accurately positioning patient for treatment, and monitoring patient during treatment.

  • Documents patient’s daily treatments and verification films, reporting unusual findings to the Chief Therapist.

  • Under the direction of the physician, accurately performs all aspects of the simulation including but not limited to creating immobilization, delivering contrast media, tattooing patient and documenting for reproducibility on the treatment machine.

  • Clearly explains simulation and treatment procedure to the patient. Monitors patient for radiation induced side effects. Refers patient to appropriate medical personnel and/or department when necessary.

  • Able to triage emergent cases and negotiate necessary scheduling changes with other therapists, chief therapist, nursing, physics and physicians.

  • Coordinates scheduling between medical and radiation oncology to ensure the utmost comfort and convenience of the patient, and to limit unnecessary upset of treatment schedules.

Quality Assurance:

  • Performs QA on patient plans prior to the initiation of first treatment and weekly thereafter reporting unusual findings to the Chief Therapist.

  • Performs daily machine warm ups and reports unusual finding to the Chief Therapist and/or Physicist.

  • Charts patient treatment and verification films in accordance to department guidelines

  • Reviews daily schedule to confirm new starts, reduced fields, and any notes pertaining to individual patients.

  • Participates in QA initiatives and projects.

  • Adheres to ALARA.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to radiation safety policies as per hospital policies. Wears radiation monitoring badge and hospital identification badge at all times.

  • Assists in orientation of new employees. Participates in the training of radiation therapy students. Assists new therapists during probation period.

  • Able have to do hand calculations during emergency situations. Able to create electron cutouts.

  • Willing to transport in house patients when necessary.

  • Attends chart rounds, peer review, tumor board, staff meetings and other departmental activities.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies to ensure timeliness of orders.

  • Accurately uses and learns all phases of the Impac System and consistently reviews charges.

  • Communicates effectively and positively with all members of the department, promoting a supportive and productive work environment.

  • Must follow the ethics of the A.R.R.T. Responsible for maintaining professional education, development, and skills.

  • Must present him/herself in a professional manner. Must be neat, clean and well dressed.

*Senior Radiation Therapist

  • Assists in education, evaluation, and testing of students. Must supervise students at all times.

  • Acts as a liaison between the therapists and chief therapist.

  • Able to assume technical management and make sound decisions in the absence of the chief therapist.

  • Actively works to promote a positive work environment.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Graduate of an approved school of radiation therapy technology

  • One year of therapy experience preferred. New graduate must have good school/clinical reference.

  • *Eight years of Radiation Therapy experience required. Must be hands on participant in the delivery of patient care, able to exercise strong clinical judgment, and demonstrate leadership ability.

Registration/Certification:

  • Must be licensed A.R.R.T.

  • Must be licensed by the State of Massachusetts.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
