Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assists in assessment, development and planning to empower and meet the needs of medically fragile children and their siblings by promoting play, expressive techniques, education, developmental and psychosocial support
-After assessment of the child, the music therapist utilizes signing, moving to and/or listening to music
within a therapeutic relationship to improve comfort, fine and gross motor skills, coping skills and enhanced communication
-Creates treatment plans and documents any clinical changes resulting from her/his interventions
-Advocates for child and family needs and promotes their leadership and
involvement within a complex health care system
-Helps parents prepare and help their children prepare for anticipated events and
decisions
-Acts as a resource to the Interdisciplinary Team in understanding age appropriate needs and responses to stress and fear
-Advocates for self-care to promote coping for patients and families
-Plans for ways of improving hospital experiences, peer relationships and school
experiences
-Acts as a reference for the IDT and families on children’s rights and family responsibilities
-Participates in Pediatric Palliative Care orientation and in in-service training programs
-Participates in interdisciplinary team conferences and facilitates discussion of issues from caseload for full discussion, consultation and evaluation.
-Acts as liaison between Agency and other health care and hospital staff
-Performs other responsibilities and duties as appropriate
-Documents and maintains up-to-date patient records so that problems, plans, actions and goals are accurately and clearly stated and changes are reflected as they occur in the plan of care
Utilizes expressive therapy techniques to facilitate bereavement and support groups for adults and children
-Works flexible schedule, including weekends to meet patient and family needs
Education/Experience Required:
Minimum of (5) Years’ experience in working with medically fragile and/or emotionally complex children, adults and families
Master’s degree in Music Therapy
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of developmental stages and related interventions
Knowledge of the range of emotional reactions to disabilities and life-threatening illness
Knowledge of palliative and hospice practice
Registration/Certification:
Board Certification in Music Therapy
