Berkshire Health Systems Patient Safety / Performance Improvement Specialist II in Pittsfield, Massachusetts

  • DEFINITION/PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

  • Is the lead Patient Safety Performance Improvement Specialist. Coordinates efforts relative to National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) and Sentinel Event Alert (SEA) compliance. Actively participates in Root Cause Analysis implementations and audit creation, implementation, and tracking to assure changes take place and gains are maintained. Prepares, coordinates and monitors Patient Safety Indicator Scorecards and reports variances to appropriate parties. Coordinates all aspects of the annual Culture of Safety Survey. The Performance Improvement Specialist II creates, organizes, coordinates, supports and participates in performance measurement and improvement activities for the assigned hospital. He/she incorporates Quality, Safety, Regulatory Compliance, Risk Management and Outcomes tools and strategies and serves in the roles of resource, consultant and educator for assigned projects, unit/departments, committees and teams. This includes oversight of policies and procedures of operations; development of performance indicators and monitoring to facilitate improvement; assessing compliance with The Joint Commission and other external regulatory agencies and facilitating and overseeing communication and education to meet standards. Additionally, assistance with public reporting to regulatory bodies and payers is expected. Primary functions are accomplished through leading the implementation of Quality industry tools such as LEAN/Six Sigma, CREW, and evidence based care standards. The PI II uses appropriate databases and statistical software to collect, analyze/interpret, present, track and trend data in order to identify and lead multidisciplinary teams toward process improvement. It is essential that PI Specialist II be the leader/facilitator for Root Cause Analysis, FMEA, Sentinel Event Alert remediation, and other performance improvement teams which lead to organizational performance improvement.

  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum qualifications are required unless stated otherwise.)

  • Experience:

  • Five (5) years’ experience in quality management and statistical analysis required.

  • Prior experience in a clinical setting preferred.

  • Experience with group leadership and facilitation required.

  • Evidence of strong computer skills required.

  • One (1) year as a Performance Improvement Specialist 1.

  • Education and Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related profession required.

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or Healthcare Administration, preferred.

  • Healthcare license or credentials preferred.

  • License, Certification & Registration:

  • CPHQ - Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality within two years of hire.

  • Other Requirements:

  • Proficient in all aspects of Performance Improvement Specialist 1 as evidenced by recent performance appraisal.

  • Possesses an understanding of a hospital medical record including an electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Maintains strong computer skills to support data collection and transforming data into actionable information, as demonstrated by skilled use of Meditech, Midas, MS Excel to build spreadsheets, report writing and graphic displays. Also use Microsoft products for reports and presentations as appropriate (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint).

  • Must have two (2) of the following qualifications: Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality Facilitation for Organization-Wide/Community-Wide Events Master’s Degree Midas System Administrator Presentation (Poster/Abstract/Podium) at a conference Author on a Published Journal Article Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or higher Crew Resource Facilitator
