Job Description:

REFERENCE/POC Coordinator

Essential Functions:

POCT Program Management

  • Supervises, establishes, and monitors POC testing throughout the hospital according to accepted laboratory practices as defined by our regulatory agencies

  • Inventories, replenishes and submits orders for supplies as appropriate

  • Coordinates with nursing service and education departments of in-service training of POC testing personnel.

  • Reviews training and assessment programs annually to comply with laboratory standard and CAP requirements

  • Fulfills the job duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist for pre-analytic, analytical, and post-analytical activities.

Testing Quality

  • Establishes testing and quality control procedures that meet CAP standards for all testing performed in the non-laboratory setting (bedside testing).

  • Monitors all required documentation of patient and quality control results (including documentation of corrective action) monthly at each POC location.

  • Supervises analytical performance of testing personnel by direct observation, reviewing results as required by CAP and/or review of corrective action logs. Evaluates, tracks, and documents competency of operators (nursing, ED Techs, and Patient Care Assistants.

  • Identifies and designs quality management monitors and indicators and reviews all data analyzed with each testing site.

  • Performs statistical analysis (CV, SD and trend analysis, etc.) as required by CAP on quality control and quality assurance data collected to identify, document and take corrective action if indicated.

  • Establishes and verifies intervals (normal ranges) for the population being tests and upper and lower reportable ranges for all quantitative tests as determined by CAP.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Prepares for and maintains readiness for CAP and JCAHO inspections.

  • Reviews testing and quality control procedures that meet CAP standards annually for all testing performed in the non-laboratory setting (bedside testing)

  • Establishes and supervises a proficiency testing program that performs with acceptable criteria established by CLIA ’88 and CAP. Coordinates rotational participation.

Instrument Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Troubleshoots hardware and software problems at multiple POC locations.

  • Calibrates and standardizes POC instruments by applying criteria of acceptable functions and performance limits (linearity, reproducibility and correlations) as established by manufacturer or CAP.

  • Troubleshoots instrument malfunction, utilizing design/function of component parts, troubleshooting design flow sheets and instrument manual. Identifies the need for external services when needed. Records all troubleshooting action taken.

Minimum Education

Associates or Bachelor's degree in medical technology from an accredited institution.

Minimum Work Experience

A minimum of 3 years’ experience.

Required Licenses

Registered as a medical technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification upon hire. New graduates must become certified within 12 months from the date of hire.
