The Derenzo Patient Care Unit is a general medical/surgical/telemetry unit. Patients are admitted to the Derenzo Patient Care Unit from the ED, PACU, physicians’ offices, and infrequently directly from their residence. The patient population on the Derenzo Patient Care Unit is diverse and consists of patients who have medical diagnoses or have undergone abdominal, orthopedic, plastic, and urological surgeries, to name a few.
Job Summary: BID Needham's new Graduate Nurse Residency Program is designed to facilitate our new graduate nurses' transition from the role of nursing student to professional direct-care provider. Through a series of classroom learning sessions, work experiences and professional activities, the program serves as a bridge to the gap between education and clinical practice. With preceptorship, mentorship and ongoing education, our new graduate nurse will be guided and supported as they develop effective decision making and leadership skills and incorporate research-based evidence into their practice. Our program's mission is to provide a supportive work environment for clinical practice and job satisfaction for our new graduate nurses. The 12-month program will enable the new graduate nurse to effectively transition from an entry-level novice nurse to a competent professional nurse.
Overview of 12-month Program:
The first three months of the program will include an in-depth orientation focusing on clinical practice and skills with the goals of establishing safe practices and acclimating to the nurse's unit.
After the orientation is completed the new nurse graduate will be paired with a mentor, and will begin a nine-month residency focusing on professional development.
The units request a two-year commitment after investing in the new graduate RN. Available schedules vary and will be discussed when interviewed for the program.
Week 1 of Orientation: Focus is on trainings, introductions, wayfinding, and skills.
Week 2-12 of Orientation: Focus is on building clinical practice/skills.
9-Month Residency Program: Focus is on professional development to include: role exploration, networking, career development, shadowing, delegation, collaboration and communication skills, wellness and self-care, professional practice project or journal review, critical thinking and evidence based practice, clinical advancement program, skills days, preceptor workshop and charge role.
As a new graduate nurse residency program participant you would carry out the customary job responsibilities required of a med/surg registered nurse.
Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
License Registered Nurse required., and American Heart Association - Basic Life Support required.
0-1 years related work experience required.
The units request a two-year commitment after investing the the new graduate RN.
BLS required, or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
BLS-AHA required for all RNS in Direct Patient Care Areas; ACLS-AHA required in all critical care areas [ED, ICU, ENDO, Radiology, PACU]; and PALS-AHA required in ED/PACU.
Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.
Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.
Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.
Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal:Birth to 6 months, Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
