Reporting to a registered nurse, this person is someone enrolled in a University's Allied Health Co-Op program and seeking additional hands-on experience. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader to the department.
Job Description:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides basic supportive care to patients including specific treatments and procedures related to Activities of Daily Living.
Completes all assignments in a timely manner by the end of the shift
Collaborates with nursing staff to determine patient care plans.
Consistently demonstrates a familiarity with the duties required of a nursing technician and performs all duties accurately in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; readily observes or assists others to obtain further knowledge.
Always follows the nursing care plan; observes established policies and procedures for proper patient treatment and care.
Prioritizes assigned patient care duties in an organized manner.
Ensures patient safety in relation to patient psychological and physical condition.
Uses proper body mechanics when providing patient care.
Adheres to safety measures per policy when caring for patients in physical restraints.
Consistently provides care which demonstrates an understanding of the needs and age-related requirements of the adult and geriatric age groups.
Uses 2 patient identifiers per policy when providing care.
Demonstrates an awareness of universal precautions when performing patient care.
Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and isolation procedures.
Assists patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
Accurately takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, whole blood glucose, weight, and intake and output measurements.
Demonstrates knowledge of correct bed making procedures (occupied, unoccupied, and postop).
Reports any patient concerns or questions to the appropriate staff member.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Always reports all variations from baseline vital signs and other changes in patient status, promptly to the nurse.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
High School Diploma/GED; or C.N.A. certification; or equivalent related work experience required.
Nursing Assistant Certification, prior LTAC or med/surg experience, or nursing clinical rotation, preferred.
MOAB training preferred
CPR Certification and First Aid training preferred, or must complete within 30 days of hire
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Experience with the use of computers preferred or familiarization with keyboard and typing skills preferred
Familiarization with medical terminology
POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE COMPETENCIES:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal: Birth to 6 months, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30-60 years, Elderly: 60-over.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Inpatient Nursing Unit, or other clinical practice setting.
PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIRED: Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for patient populations regularly served.
SAFETY: Completes Hospital and Departmental orientation; then annually completes Employee Comprehensive Education, Sexual Harassment, Compliance, and other required trainings and competencies as assigned from time-to-time, and within established timelines for completion.
