Nantucket Cottage Hospital Pharmacy Technician II-Full Time in Nantucket, Massachusetts
Job Summary: Under the supervision of a Pharmacist, performs a variety of technical duties related to procuring, storing, preparing and stocking medications in accordance with regulatory and hospital procedures.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Rotate through all work areas of the pharmacy.
Transport medications, drug-delivery devices, and other pharmacy stock from the pharmacy to nursing units and other departments as appropriate.
Re-supply ADM’s in the appropriate areas as needed.
Prepare medications and supplies for restocking and dispensing, including:
o Preparing bulk medications;
o Assist pharmacist in validating sterile compounding supplies and components used in sterile compounding;
o Compounding patient-specific intravenous mixtures as approved by pharmacist.
o Prepare and review medication labels as appropriate;
o Prepare inventories, order medications and supplies from vendors; receiving and stocking medications in department;
o Maintaining a secure and separate area for expired/recalled medications awaiting reverse-distribution;
Assist with maintaining appropriate Vaccine records regarding vaccine ordering and distribution as required by the Department of Public Health (MIIS)
Assist with data gathering, ensuring medications are appropriately stored including, monitoring refrigerator and freezer temperatures, controlled room temps, humidity, etc. in the appropriate areas.
Ensuring medications are checked for outdates on a regular schedule and returning expired medications to the designated Reverse distribution company.
Perform monthly nursing unit inspections, maintain workload records, and collect quality assurance data.
Adheres to all policies and procedures of the pharmacy and hospital in a manner consistent with professional, ethical, and legal standards of good pharmacy practice.
Sterile Hazardous and non-hazardous compounding principles and understanding of USP <797>, USP<800> and Mass DPH regulations.

Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of pharmacy processes, sterile techniques, and related procedures.
Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace with the department, with frequent interruptions.

Comprehensive understanding of computer privacy and protected patient health information.
Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the pharmacy team.
Must be aware of potential hazards within the Pharmacy (hazardous, cytotoxic, teratogenic drugs, unscreened personnel and patients, universal precautions, etc.) and adhere to safety standards established by the hospital and regulatory agencies. Acknowledges risks involved with hazardous substances.
Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers.
Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations. Ability to operate all equipment in the pharmacy. Additionally, must use telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.
Ability to stand and walk constantly.
Ability to help lift objects ranging from five (5) to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.
Ability to work as a team member.
Utilize (PPE), face shields/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and goggles as well as all sterile compounding equipment and CSTD’s.
Credentials and Experience Required :
Completion of a formalized Pharmacy Technician training program.
Strong skills in mathematics with a science background, knowledge of the metric system, knowledge of basic pharmacy best practices and procedures, knowledge of medications and related supplies, and strong computational skills.
One year of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
Current, valid State of Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician License required.
National certification (PTCB) required within 1 year of hire.
Duties include pharmacy responsibilities, including safe-handling of hazardous, chemo-toxic substances.
Failure to follow established procedures and safety practices could result in serious injury.
Subject to frequent stressful situations.
Periodic exposure to poor lighting and high levels of acoustic noise.
Special Requirements :
Generally, works the day shift.
May be exposed to the following hazards: temperature fluctuations, moderate noise levels, minimal dust, infectious diseases and other hazardous and non-hazardous, NIOSH listed medications/substances.
Must be available to work overtime as needed to complete all job duties.
Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital-declared emergency.
