Nantucket Cottage Hospital Lead Pharmacy Technician-Full Time in Nantucket, Massachusetts

Job Summary: Under Pharmacist supervision and following established procedures, assists in the oversight and operation of pharmacy technology. Performs Sterile Compounding and is responsible for the stocking, cleaning and maintenance of the Sterile Compounding suite. Assists Pharmacists in preparation/readiness of pharmacy department for TJC and DPH surveys by participating in quality assurance and improvement projects.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Manager in equipment oversight, operational enhancements, safety, and scheduling decisions. Assists in developing and maintaining policies and procedures in collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager, pharmacists, and physician leadership.

  • Assists in procurement, inventory, and distribution of medications as required by pharmacy manager and/or pharmacists.

  • Checks calibration, certification, and verifies the proper operation of all equipment to be used during the work day. Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.

  • Assists in loading, refilling, monitoring, and the operation of automated dispensing machines.

  • Attends staff meetings and in-services and maintains appropriate CEU’s in accordance with Massachusetts State Licensure, PTCB, and ASHP requirements.

  • Assists with medication safety and medication reconciliation projects as appropriate.

  • Provides information to medical staff regarding formulary, policies and procedures, etc... as appropriate.

  • Orient various and new pharmacy technician staff within the department & NCH

  • Maintains the necessary equipment, supplies, maintenance records and daily logs as required

  • May be asked to perform the duties of a pharmacy technician.

  • Performs duties in crisis and emergency situations. After review with the Pharmacy Manager, updates and maintains Pharmacy Department COOP plan, follows and observes established policies and procedures to assure accurate completion of the task.

  • Understands the computer programs and procedures necessary to perform all technician duties within the department and outside of the department.

  • Complies with federal and state compounding preparations in compliance with USP<797>, <800>, Mass DPH/Board of Pharmacy and best practices.

  • Participates in the preparation & maintenance of the cleanroom environment, equipment oversight, supplies, and data logging necessary for compliant sterile compounding.

  • Performs Sterile Compounding of CSPs and maintains performance competencies related-to compounding of Hazardous and non-hazardous CSPs. Maintains and updates all data logs related to USP <797>, USP<800> compounding environments.

  • Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement projects in the department including, but not limited to, cost containment and USP <797> & USP <800> compliance to ensure Pharmacy readiness for TJC and Mass DPH surveys.

  • Transports and transfers sterile & hazardous CSPs using established procedures, best practices and departmental guidelines.

  • Uses independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing duties.

  • Remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.

  • Performs all other duties as directed.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

  • Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function outside the pharmacy department.

  • Must be able to satisfactorily perform all requisite Sterile Compounding competencies

  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.

  • Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of pharmacy processes, sterile techniques, and related procedures.

  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace with the department, with frequent interruptions.

  • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.

  • Comprehensive understanding of computer privacy and protected patient health information.

  • Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the pharmacy team.

  • Must desire to work to the top of one’s license and abilities

  • Must be aware of potential hazards within the Pharmacy (hazardous, cytotoxic, teratogenic drugs, unscreened personnel and patients, universal precautions, etc.) and adhere to safety standards established by the hospital and regulatory agencies. Acknowledges risks involved with hazardous substances.

  • Communication skills sufficient to resolve conflicts, and relay information concisely to department manager, staff, patients and other hospital personnel.

  • Must possess understanding of the HICS system.

  • Must have ability and understanding of MIIS system and ability to input necessary data.

  • Sterile compounding and personal competencies related-to

Ability to:

  • Ability to operate all department-related equipment. Additionally, must use computer, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related department equipment.

  • Ability to stand and walk constantly.

  • Ability to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds unassisted.

  • Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.

  • Frequent bending, twisting, crouching, squatting, pulling, pushing, and reaching required, as well as the ability to remain stationary for short periods and perform repetitive motions

    Credentials and Experience Required

  • Graduate of an accredited Certified Pharmacy Technician Program (PTCB)

  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts License as a Pharmacy Technician (BORP)

  • 3 to 5 years Prior Hospital Pharmacy Technician experience is required, or at least 3 years in supervisory or lead role or at least 3 recent years performing Sterile Compounding.

Working conditions

  • Duties include pharmacy responsibilities, including safe-handling of hazardous, chemo-toxic substances

  • Failure to follow established procedures and safety practices could result in serious injury.

  • Subject to frequent stressful situations

  • Periodic exposure to poor lighting and high levels of acoustic noise.

    Special Requirements

  • Regular work week in which additional hours are sometimes required

  • Flexibility of work schedule (i.e. hours/ days)

  • Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital-declared emergency.
