EH&S Specialist

Position Summary

The Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist plans, establishes, implements, and maintains a variety of occupational health, safety, environmental programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees and departments. This individual assures that Catalent complies with applicable federal, state and local health, safety and environmental laws, regulations and standards.

This role will be located at our site in Chelsea, MA.

This 90,000 square-foot Boston-area facility is Catalent’s global Center of Excellence for spray dry dispersion and Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) capsule manufacture and packaging. The site features inhaled powder spray drying, as well as multiple commercial-scale lines for capsule filling and blister packaging. On-site spray dryers include best-in-class GEA Niro SD1, SD4 and SD7, the latter being the largest CGMP unit of its kind for DPI in North America.

The Role (daily responsibilities)

  • Provides new employees health and safety orientation and participates in the development of materials relating to these presentations.

  • Organizes and schedules safety shoe/eye glass truck.

  • Manages the collection and pick up of hazardous waste.

  • Develops and maintains emergency action plans and procedures.

  • Provides timely, high quality EHS technical support.

  • Designs, conducts and oversees EHS training for all employees and contractors.

  • Conducts inspections and enforces adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals as well as company standards and procedures.

  • Conducts safety training and safety team development and meetings.

  • Evaluates new materials for safe handling procedures with Catalent’s Material Classification System.

  • Understands spill containment, notification and remediation.

  • Plans and prepares for regulatory inspections, ensuring all records and files are maintained and readily available.

  • Maintains compliance with MWRA, OSHA, and Chelsea Fire Department and other duties as assigned.

  • Conducts monthly safety meetings.

  • Prepares chemical reports as needed to Governmental agencies.

  • Performs accident investigations and provides prompt follow-up with corrective and preventative actions.

  • Manages a subset of EHS Section’s responsibilities (e.g., hazardous waste management, electrical safety is a subset of Occupational Safety), often including the quantity and quality of the work (e.g., waste pickups). Conducts and/or oversees inspections and activities for hazardous waste, fire extinguishers, safety eyewash stations and document results on daily, weekly, monthly, or otherwise scheduled routine.

The Candidate (requirements)

  • Minimum of three to five years of related experience in mixed use (office, manufacturing and lab) environment required. Experience in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences or related field preferred.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the technical specialty, applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines related to area of expertise.

  • Proven ability to quickly assess situations through demonstrated problem-solving skills and knowledge of state of the art technology related to their EHS discipline.

  • Demonstrated understanding of key regulatory requirements (e.g. DOT, Mass DEP, Hazmat/RCRA, NFPA and OSHA rules and regulations) and their application to a laboratory and manufacturing environment, particularly in the following key areas: Environment (ex. waste management, lab safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability) & EHS management systems.

  • Skilled in the standards, concepts, practices, and procedures within the health, safety and environmental fields.

  • Confined Space Entry, LOTO implementation/training, respirator implementation/training and health programs
