Tufts Medicine Clinical Director of Perioperative Services, RN in Lowell, Massachusetts

Tufts Medicine / Lowell General Hospital is seeking a strategic leader in the role of Director of Perioperative Services. This role reports to the Chief Nursing Officer and is responsible for overall patient care and safety within Surgical Services.

In this role you are r esponsible for overall quality and efficiencies including:

  • Improves case scheduling and block management processes

  • Serves as a standing member of the Block Utilization Management Committee

  • Liaising between individual surgeons and surgeon practices in a positive and diplomatic fashion to keep all affected parties well-informed of pending action items involving the maintenance of their block time

  • Gains expertise in the EPIC system-wide electronic medical record and works to continuously improve its functionality within the department and for the surgeons who utilize it.

  • Reduces late starts due to lack of patient preparation, patient flow, and surgeon/anesthesia variables.

  • Improves patient hand-off communication between Surgical Day Care, Operating Room, and Post Anesthesia Care Unit.

  • Achieves a high degree of efficiency with decreased room turnover time.

  • Integrates best practices in all aspects of the perioperative program, including laser safety, Universal Protocol, Time-Outs, oversight of clinical education, and more.

  • Focuses on strategic growth of key clinical service lines to enhance profitability

  • Identifies surgeon unmet needs, improve relationships with surgeons to achieve the highest (surgeon) customer satisfaction

  • Directs the appropriate distribution of responsibilities throughout the Department to successfully achieve the goals established for patient care and services

  • Combines current expert clinical knowledge with extensive management experience and skill to direct the operations of the Department effectively.

  • Directs the process of analysis and evaluation of standards and procedures in all service programs to provide continual improvement in quality of care, and ensure that authorized changes are efficiently and uniformly implemented.

  • Is a role model for exceptional customer service, promoting accountability at the leader and staff levels for outstanding patient experience.

  • Provides for the development of high standards of patient care and for compliance with established standards, laws, regulations, and state/federal requirements.

  • Promotes the active involvement of all personnel in the necessary functions for compliance in order to achieve accreditation – including Magnet - and licensure requirements on a continuous basis.

  • Assures that budget accommodates clinical programs and service requirements, philosophy and standards.

  • Understands the current Joint Commission, CMS and DPH Regulations/requirements for Surgical Services.

  • Serves on various committees within the institution for the improvement of patient care and acts as the subject matter expert on all surgical related activities.

  • Maintains current comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices, and techniques of Administration by participation in Professional Associations such as Yankee Alliance and the Association of Operating Room RNs (AORN), attendance at seminars, workshops, conventions, college courses and reading professional publications.

  • Is responsible for the development and implementation of the LGH peri-operative services departmental strategic plan.

  • Works collaboratively with System Medical Directors for the clinical Services.

  • Provides supervision, coaching, and teaching to direct reports on a regular basis and assists with achievement of their professional growth goals. Develops strategies for receiving feedback from direct reports, leadership staff, and physicians

  • Serves as departmental leadership chairperson and attends department staff meetings on a regular basis. Completes employee rounding in all areas of responsibility.

  • Assumes a leadership role in special initiative breakout quality activities run on a national level. Reports results to Quality Council. Serves as Safety Champion for the peri-operative services departments in all areas of patient safety to drive culture of safety for the service line. Works collaboratively with legal and risk departments on all compliance and risk issues for the service areas.

  • Responsible for operational and capital budget forecast, monitoring and reconciliations for maximum productivity.

  • Reviews and revises all area policies and procedures in accordance with all HHS, federal, and JCAHO guidelines and requirements. Assists clinical managers in implementing policy and procedural changes, as needed.

  • In collaboration with the COO and CNO, supports the Hospital-Wide and Nursing Provision of Care.

  • Demonstrates leadership skills including analytical thinking, entrepreneurship, strategic planning, change management and community outreach.

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with Administration, Finance, Information Systems, Human Resources and other departments on behalf of the Department of Patient Services in order to promote the goals of the peri-operative services department.

  • Maintains the integrity of all systems and data for the department.

  • Promotes and engages in Tufts Medicine system-thinking and achieves cost savings through standardization of surgical capital and supplies where possible.

  • Actively uses best practices and technologies to build organizational capacity.

  • Ensures that there is sufficient flexibility and capacity to meet foreseeable demand for services.

  • Manages issues that improve referral relationships and the peri-operative area’s reputation with internal customers, external customers and physician groups.

    Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required, Master’s Degree (MSN, MBA, MHA) required; Doctorate highly desirable

  • RN licensure in the State of Massachusetts required

  • A minimum of 8-10 years progressive experience and demonstrated leadership ability as shown in previous professional experiences of increased responsibility.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues, physicians, administrators, and other health care professionals

  • Demonstrated ability to act independently upon information and make decisions that achieve optimal results

  • Demonstrated ability with management of operational budgets

  • Ability to aggregate, analyze data
