The Position

The Senior Software and Application Engineer is part of the Digital, Data, and IT team within R&ED (Research & Early Development) in Boston. The team supports the strategic digital transformation imperative within the R&ED organization, crucial for realizing scientific strategy. The Senior Software and Application Engineer is responsible for the development, implementation, operation, maintenance, and support of the data, middleware, and/or IT systems used by R&ED units across Novo Nordisk. The Senior Software and Application Engineer joins projects in a lead role and is able to work independently with little to no supervision.

Relationship

The role will report to the Head of Lab IT in Lexington, MA and work closely with employees at Novo Nordisk R&D sites in the North American region (Including Boston area sites, Fremont, and Boulder.), lab and scientific research groups, DDIT RED and broader DDIT organization globally (primarily in Denmark).

Essential Functions

  • Generate and mature relevant ideas, concepts, and products focused on delivering patient value and supporting Novo Nordisk's future initiatives

  • Lead engineering tasks with hands-on involvement in complex activities related to software development and data solutions. Work closely with scientists and analysts to translate line-of-business (LoB) needs into innovative, user-friendly solutions

  • Design, develop, and maintain cloud-based and on-premises data platforms and infrastructure, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze data requirements, develop data pipelines, and deploy scalable storage and processing solutions

  • Architect, implement, and oversee data models, ETL processes, and integrations that support business intelligence and analytics efforts

  • Contribute to the optimization of data storage, retrieval, and processing with a strong focus on security and privacy

  • Monitor and resolve issues related to both cloud and on-premises infrastructure to ensure high performance and reliability of applications

    Physical Requirements

    The job is based in Lexington, MA. Some travel to be expected.

    Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years OR a Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience is required

  • General Qualifications:

  • Experience creating Browser projects and Studies protocols in Dotmatics

  • Experience turning user requirements into actionable developer tasks

  • Experience working in an agile scrum team

  • Familiar with data analysis tools and pipelines using python and jupyter notebooks

  • Knowledge of cloud engineering best practices for web application deployment

  • Experience with AWS microservice architecture

  • Experience developing and maintaining CICD pipelines

  • Experience with Typescript & react applications strongly desired

  • Familiarity with AWS CDK desired but not essential

  • Familiarity with Java / Python desired but not required

  • Experience building trust and influence throughout an organization preferred

  • Ability to thrive in an international atmosphere

  • Self-motivated and enjoys leading projects and day-to-day work
