Summary The Lead Pharmacy Technician position is located within the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System in Leeds, Massachusetts. The incumbent oversees the technician workflow within the outpatient pharmacy and helps to maintain pharmacy equipment. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: Prescription processing and workflow oversight Performs the core functions of an outpatient pharmacy technician. Oversees pharmacy technicians' workflow within the outpatient pharmacy and reports status to pharmacy supervisor. Monitors outpatient pharmacy drug inventory and expiration dates for medications per pharmacy policy. Provides ongoing feedback to pharmacy supervisor regarding staff competency relating to equipment operation and work performance as observed on the prescription processing line and other outpatient areas. Performs supply ordering and inventory duties in the absence of the procurement pharmacy technician. Performs limited administrative duties in the absence of the pharmacy administrative officer. Attends monthly national pharmacy technician calls/meetings to ensure that VA CWM HCS Pharmacy Technicians are updated on national topics. Automation Coordinates the technical aspect of outpatient drug distribution activities to ensure standard operating procedures are in alignment with automation capabilities so that efficiencies are maximized. Adds new and deletes obsolete medications to maintain current inventory. Runs, reviews, and maintains automation reports on biannual basis. Resolves problems and complaints regarding automated filling and dispensing units. Ensures that equipment is cleaned and maintained to minimize downtime. Trains and orient pharmacy staff involved in operating the automated equipment. Maintains automated equipment user files. Actively participates in writing, updating, training, and implementation of pharmacy policy and procedures pertaining to automation equipment. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: One year experience at the next lower level (GS-6), and must fully meet the KSAs: Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs (GS-7): *1. Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. 2. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. 3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. 4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. 6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. 7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. 8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: Position requires some walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
