State of Massachusetts Recreational Therapist II in Holyoke, Massachusetts

The Veterans Home at Holyoke is seeking an experience and enthusiastic professional for our Recreational Therapist II vacancy. The incumbent for this position will assist the Director of Recreation with planning, organizing and instructing Veterans through participation in both individual and group leisure activities in accordance with their needs and capabilities. Additionally, the individual in this role will be the backup to the Director of Recreation when necessary. *Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):* * Assist in the planning and implementation of activities suitable for Veterans in a long-term care facility. * Assist in the development of individual Veteran therapeutic goals and objectives. * Support Veterans’ spiritual, emotional and physical needs. * Responsible for the completion of recreation documentation (i.e. progress notes, assessments, MDS). * Assist with community trips and special events. * Order and maintain recreational supplies and equipment to ensure their availability and safety for Veteran use. * Provide leisure education designed to help the Veterans acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for independence and social involvement. * Attend professional meetings, seminars and conferences to maintain a comprehensive and current knowledge of recreation therapy. * Provide leadership and supervisory support in the Director of Recreation’s absence. /_Schedule:_/This position is 40 hours per week; varied work schedule to include working every other weekend. The ability to work holidays and flexible hours in order to meet program needs is expected. /_Required Qualifications_:/ * Knowledge and understanding of Recreation Therapy principles and techniques. * Ability to work effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team. * Ability to deal tactfully with others. * Ability to lead a group, including departmental staff. * Ability to plan, assign and coordinate the activities of others. * Ablity to exercise sound judgement as well as discretion in handling confidential information. * Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. /_Preferred Qualifications_:/ * CTRS Certification (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Therapist). * Experience working in a long-term care facility. * Experience working with geriatric and/or memory-impaired populations. * Talent for recognizing the cultural diversity of the Home and ensuring sensitive and equitable treatment for all who work and visit the facility. /*About The Veterans Home at Holyoke */ The Veterans Home at Holyoke is a state-funded, fully accredited health care facility that offers veterans quality health care, including full-time residential accommodations, and provides educational and social services for Veterans in the Commonwealth. First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. * Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in planning, organizing, instituting or conducting therapeutic recreation services in a recognized public or private agency and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. /The job specifications outlined below and within the attached Form 30 are currently being reviewed and will be updated in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) effective July 3, 2023. / Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience. II. A Master's degree or higher with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
