Mental Health Assistant

*Mental Health Assistant *- Full Time or Part Time, 2nd shift

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assists patients with activities of daily living specific to functional capabilities/limitations, culture, age and developmental level.

  • Performs tasks delegated by the registered nurse and reports/records data as needed.

  • Maintains patient safety at all times.

  • Maintains all necessary documentation.

  • Conducts and/or participates in activities and/or groups under the supervision of and as instructed by the licensed therapist.

  • Carries out Interdisciplinary Treatment Plan Goals, as outlined by Interdisciplinary Treatment Team.

  • Continuously monitors/observes patients to assure needs are met in a timely manner.

  • Can initiate CPR measures when indicated. Recognizes and promptly reports life threatening situations.

  • Respects patient/family privacy and maintains confidentiality.

  • Assists in monitoring and maintaining standards of safety, infection control and monitors environment for safety hazards and cleanliness.

  • Demonstrates positive, effective working relationships with all other employees and medical staff.

  • Creates and maintains a professional public image.

  • Performs safety and life signs checks, adhering to designated schedules.

  • Responsible for running activity based groups as scheduled by the Director of Therapeutic Programs.

  • Assists with patient admissions and discharges by setting up and clearing patient rooms.

  • Completes belongings searches upon admission and assists patients with handling of clothing and other personal property throughout their hospital stay.


  • High School Diploma or GED, with some advanced training or education preferred.

  • Able to read, write and speak English.

  • Prior experience performing patient care preferred.

  • Current CPR upon hire or within 30 days of hire.

  • Knowledge of growth and development across the life span.

  • Ability to follow directions, coordinate a variety of responsibilities and receive supervision from several sources.

  • Experience in leading groups and activities, preferred.

  • Knowledge of recreational activities (i.e. arts & crafts, games, sports), preferred.

  • Good organizational and communication skills.
