Berkshire Health Systems Admitting Officer in Great Barrington, Massachusetts


  • Lays the foundation for a positive patient experience by providing a courteous and professional reception to our facility. Registers patients being admitted to the hospital or receiving outpatient or emergency treatment in a friendly, accurate and timely manner. Secures patient account by obtaining appropriate demographic, insurance and medical information and accurately enters into computer system collecting applicable co-pays. The Intake Coordinator will be accountable for the coordination of the insurance verification process for all inpatients and outpatients in order to determine the status of the patient's eligibility and benefits. In addition, this person will often be required to interpret and relay information to others in order to ensure proper reimbursement for services rendered. Strives to minimize patient arrival to treatment area time, improving customer satisfaction as it relates to the registration process, waiting time and general communications. Performs all duties in a manner which promotes team concept and reflects our mission and philosophy. When stationed in the Emergency Department, must appropriately respond to exceptional situations presented by physicians, nursing staff, patients, visitors, or the general public, with appropriate referral involvement of other healthcare professionals. This position requires the ability to use good judgment in a variety of situations.

  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum qualifications are required unless stated otherwise.)

  • Experience:

  • Admitting and Meditech experience preferred. 1 year experience in hospital environment with patient care or patient relation experience preferred.

  • Education and Training:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required. 2 years college (secretarial/health related) or equivalent work experience preferred. Medical terminology preferred.

  • License, Certification & Registration:

  • None

  • Other Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of computer based applications (i.e.Meditech) and strong pc keyboard skills (40 wpm typing). Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills. Ideal candidate will demonstrate and maintain a high level of flexibility. Proven ability to be an effective team member and interact appropriately with the community, hospital staff and physicians while maintaining a high level of confidentiality. Proven, outstanding customer service skills, consistently demonstrating a professional, pleasant presentation. Ability to speak the English language in a clearly understandable manner. Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to use sound judgment in decision making. Demonstrated strong organization skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize. Knowledge of insurance/managed care preferred. Ability to learn quickly as technology/insurance requirements change. Ability to work in a fast pace environment with frequent interruptions.
