Heywood Hospital Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy, Per Diem in Gardner, Massachusetts

Job Summary Assists pharmacist in filling and delivering medications. Prepares parenteral medications and chemotherapy using sterile techniques and following USP 797 guidelines. Performs unit inspections. Maintains par levels of medications on nursing units and hi the pharmacy. Removes and reorders all outdated medication in the pharmacy and on nursing units. Keeps equipment clean and in working condition. Maintains materials and supplies to do job. Places orders with wholesalers and individual vendors. Maintains 34 files. Other duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS Minimum Education * High School diploma or the equivalent required. Minimum Licenses and Certifications * Registration or registration eligible with the Commonwealth of MA is required. * National certification from a recognized certifying body (PTCB) is required or must be obtained within the first 6 months of hire. Minimum Work Experience * One year retail/hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred. Required Skills * Good working knowledge of common medication names and dosing preferred. * Computer knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred. * Meditech knowledge is helpful. * Knowledge of automated dispensing machines (Omnicell, Pyxis) is preferred. * Experience in USP 797 or the willingness to learn required. * Good customer service/interpersonal skills required. Functional Demands Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Frequently reaches (extending hands and arms in any direction), and handles (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or working with hands). Occasionally stoops (bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist). Essentail Functions * Accurately fills and delivers patient medication orders and unit requisitions, generates lists and fills patient medication bins, and returns unused medications to stock.Restocks automated medication dispensing systems * Accurately prepares medications for dispensing using the laminar flow hood and aseptic technique consistent with USP 797 regulations.. * Organizes medications for pharmacist to dispense by ; preparing labels; calculating quantities; assembling intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical therapies. * Correctly places medications in stock and packages unit dose medications for stock from bulk bottles. * Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed medications and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt; removing outdated drugs. * Collection and validation of the medication list by verification with the patient, pharmacies, primary care providers and specialists. Information gathering often includes calling the outpatient pharmacy to verify adherence, dosages and insurance information. * Records medical histories while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations. * Inputs medication list data accurately into MediTech medication reconciliation module for pharmacist review.Completes mandatory data collection spreadsheet on a daily basis. * Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. * Ensures medication availability by delivering medications to patients and departments. * Returns, accurately and completely, medications to picking bins, as well as, ensures bins remain stocked. * Performs inspections of medication storage areas and submits monthly reports to the Director of the Pharmacy.The entire inventory has to be checked for expired medications in the pharmacy and automated dispensing cabinets * Answer incoming phone calls and fields questions * Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages. * Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. * Works together with departmental and healthcare teams to complete assignments. * Removes or arranges for removal of safety hazards from environment immediately. * Prioritizes and reprioritizes work based on the changing needs of the patients. * Keeps equipment in clean and working condition.
