Sanofi Group Research Associate Principal in Framingham, Massachusetts

Position Overview:

Would you enjoy applying these skills to help us in our Global Discovery Pathology team for clinical, pre-clinical and research therapeutic development projects?

Our Global Discovery Pathology team based in Framingham/ Cambridge, MA is committed to delivering project-focused solutions for all Sanofi research projects by providing integrated expertise in translational/comparative pathobiology, specialized histology, and innovative cellular and molecular imaging through our agile, empowered, and collaborative team. We believe this is a truly exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic science-driven histotechnologist.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Basic histology techniques (e.g. embed, process) as well as standard and special staining techniques.

  • Perform automated immunohistochemistry (IHC) employing automated platforms (e.g. Leica BondRx) on frozen and FFPE tissues. Assays are performed independently and in collaboration with project pathologists and principal investigators following specific standard operating procedures to assure compliance with study designs.

  • Contribute to project-based objectives by researching antibodies for application to appropriate assays utilizing multiple online resources including BenchSci, Human Protein Atlas, vendor websites, etc.

  • Lead optimization of new single and multiplex IHC protocols for project based novel drug targets working closely with pathologist and team members.

  • Order and maintain inventory of all IHC related reagents.

  • Ensure all IHC equipment is functioning properly, bi-annual comparison runs, bi-annual bulk solution changes, weekly cleaning, etc.

  • Maintain necessary quality control and assurance records and documentation of optimization protocols.

  • Utilize available in-house resources to obtain appropriate controls for assay development and performance.

  • Contribute creative and technical expertise as a member of the histology team.

  • Access the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and image archiving system (e.g. eSlide Manager) to archive and curate digital database of IHC workups images.

Essential Qualifications:

  • BS or BA in Medical Technology or Science-related field or Associates Degree with 10 years related experience.

  • 2 years IHC experience or a minimum of 5 years progressive histology/pathology or medical laboratory experience.

  • Ability to work in a team and collaborative environment.

  • HT, HTL or ASCP certification or equivalent.


  • Open to achieving and maintaining QIHC certification.

  • Previous experience in pharmaceutical industry or contract research organization.

  • Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance in the laboratory.

  • Prior experience with automated IHC platforms (Leica, Ventana).

  • Experience cutting frozen sections of cryostat and paraffin sections on a microtome.

  • Digital whole slide scanning and familiarity with digital pathology image analysis tools (such as HALO, Visiopharm etc.) will be a plus.
