The Medical Assistant performs a variety of direct and indirect activities in caring for the personal and comfort needs of patients according to Standards, Policies and procedures of Carney Hospital. He/she reports to the Clinical Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities & Standards :

  • Age Appropriate Care:

  • Utilizes knowledge of the principles of growth and development in the treatment of patients in the Emergency Department.

  • Patient Flow

  • Escorts patients from the waiting room into the main treatment area as directed by licensed staff.

  • Assists in the transfer of patients from the ambulance bay to the treatment area

  • Transports patients without delay to other departments as needed

  • Escorts patients to psychiatric inpatient unit as needed

  • Notifies licensed staff of any patient attempting to leave the Emergency Department prior to completion of treatment

  • Cleans room and stretchers after each visit and prepares the room for the next patient

  • Patient Care

  • Assists patient with undressing and dressing

  • Assists patient with ambulation including to and from bathroom

  • Secures/collects patient’s personal effects

  • Offers comfort measures such as pillows, blankets and repositioning

  • Assists patients with meals and feeds patient as necessary

  • Notifies RN of any issues related to patient care such as skin issues, incontinence, mobility and swallowing.

  • Independently performs the following procedures upon direction of staff nurse: uncomplicated dressing application or changes; cleansing of wounds; irrigation of wounds; application of splints, braces, immobilizes, ace wraps, cockup splints and ice.

  • Maintains aseptic technique when assisting RN's /MD's with sterile procedures.

  • Assembles crutches, properly measures patients and instructs patient in correct crutch walking techniques.

  • Performs 12-lead EKG and provides it to the RN or MD. Troubleshoots technical issues with machine.

  • Provides post-mortem care

  • Safety

  • Participates in handoff from licensed staff and provides handoff to all members of the healthcare team.

  • Assists licensed staff with implementing Fall Prevention Strategies such as bed/chair exit alarms, use of fall bracelets and nonskid slippers

  • Provides safe care to patients at risk for falls, does not leave patients at risk unattended on commode or toilet

  • Rounds on patients hourly with attention to toileting, pain, positioning and location of personal items.

  • Consistently keeps patient's stretcher in low, locked position with side bed rails up and call light within reach.

  • Responds to call lights promptly

  • Performs observation for one to four patients for safety.

  • Performs observation for one to one observation for patients at high risk for suicide or patients in restraint for violent or self-destructive behavior.

  • Assists RN with Room Sweep

  • Maintains a direct line of sight with the patient under observation, visualizing patients using the bathroom, sleeping, during visits and during meetings with members of the healthcare team.

  • Notes changes in patient status and reports these immediately to the RN. Calls for help if the patient is snoring or sounds/appears to have difficulty breathing.

  • Identifies escalating behavior such as crying, becoming angry or aggressive and calls for help.

  • Recognizes elopement risk and notifies nurse immediately.

  • Recognizes patient emergency situations and calls for help. Utilizes Code button as necessary.

  • Documents patient safety observations every 15 minutes on Patient Observation Monitoring Tool.

  • Aids in the application and release of restraint under the direction licensed staff.

  • Specimen Collection

  • Performs phlebotomy correctly as per Laboratory/ ED Protocol.

  • Obtains specimens such as urine, sputum and stool and correctly labels and completes requisitions at the bedside.

  • Performs Point of Care tests per policy

  • Transport ABG's and other lab specimens as needed in a timely manner.

  • Documentation

  • Consistently and accurately obtains and records the following information for patients as assigned according to shift routine and policy. Reports abnormal/unusual results to RN immediately.

    • Intake & Output
  • Vital Signs including postural vital signs as necessary

  • Weights/other parameters as directed

  • Documents on Handoff Communication Tool in a clear, concise, complete, accurate and legible manner

  • Technology

  • Remains current with email. Reads and composes emails as needed.

  • Remains current with education provided by learning management system

  • Demonstrates familiarity with Steward intranet for information regarding Employee Health, Human Resources, Policies, MSDS and other job-related links

  • Infection Control .

  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to all infection control procedures including handwashing techniques, universal precautions, dwell time of cleaning products and pre-cleaning of reusable equipment.

  • Assist in keeping the unit and patient care areas, clean and orderly on a daily basis and ongoing as needed.

  • Stock carts and empty laundry hampers prn during shift and at end of each shift as assigned.

  • Cleans equipment and tags items according to policy (e.g. commode, EKG, I.V. poles)

  • Stocking and Ordering

  • Orders supplies to maintain inventory of supply closets/cabinets in Treatment area and CPEC at par level.

  • Enters requisitions using MediTech

  • Stocks all the alcoves and IV baskets in treatment area, CPEC and ambulance bay with medical supplies and laundry at least twice per shift and PRN.

  • Checks expiration dates on all items; replaces outdated items and labels newly opened bottles with "date opened" per procedure.

  • Reports missing or defective equipment to charge nurse.

  • Emergency Readiness

  • Immediately responds to fire alarms, disaster drills in accordance with ED procedures.

  • Checks suction equipment in assigned alcoves for proper functioning and cleanliness, and changes tubing and equipment PRN.

  • Performs chest compressions and follows the direction of the “code” charge nurse and anticipates needs of Code Team Members

  • Communication/interpersonal skills.

  • Answers telephone in courteous manner, identifies self, and department, relays messages accurately.

  • Greets and assists staff, visitors, patients, as needed throughout the hospital.

  • Reports on/off to RN at change of shift and whenever leaving nursing unit. Report should include all pertinent information via SBAR format.

  • Exhibits self-directed behavior and works co-operatively with the RN and other co-workers to complete assignments. Organizes work to complete tasks in a timely manner

  • Demonstrates a willingness to co-operate, receptiveness to new ideas and accepts constructive criticism and/or assistance readily.

  • Exhibits behavior that is not abrasive, rude, abrupt, domineering or condescending when interacting with patients, visitors or other employees.

  • Exhibits enthusiasm and initiative in performing assigned tasks and demonstrates productive use of free time by taking on additional tasks without being asked.

  • Projects poise and a positive image. ID Badge must be worn while at work.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED

  • Experience (Type & Length): Experience as an ED Tech or other patient care role within health care setting, inpatient or outpatient preferred

  • Certification/Licensure: EMT, Paramedic, Certified Medical Assistant, or enrolled in Nursing Program with at least one (l) semester completed preferred. Current BLS through either AHA or Red Cross required.
