Transdev Assistant Shop Manager in Dorchester, Massachusetts
Transdev in Boston, MA is seeking an Assistant Shop Manager for its Boston Public Schools transportation contract. The Assistant Shop Manager is responsible for managing all activities of the Maintenance Department including maintenance, servicing, and repairs of all vehicles at the assigned facility.

Key Responsibilities:
Schedule employees for the department; ensure the effective supervision of mechanics and other shop workers; and administer collective bargaining agreement provisions.
Strive to maintain 100% PM compliance.
Select, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned personnel.
Coordinate and verify quality of work performed by outside vendors.
Oversee the development of efficient repair schedules and review repair cost estimates.
Approve priority of maintenance and repairs based on availability of materials and parts and requirements of scheduled operations.
Help to ensure that company and client equipment is maintained and operating efficiently.
Control and monitor inventory.
Enter Work Orders, Parts and Purchase Orders into electronic maintenance system (RTA).
Verify accuracy of all purchases for shop.
Ensure all vehicles are fueled, cleaned, and properly working.
Develop and implement safety policies and procedures for the department and maintain a safe working environment.
Participate in the development and administration of the operational budget.
Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods.
Ensure that property, grounds, and facilities are clean and well organized.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
A High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
Four (4) years of recent experience in the repair and maintenance of all types of automotive and transit equipment.
A college degree may substitute for a portion of the required experience.
Bus or heavy-duty truck repair experience, preferred.
Two (2) years of related supervisory experience.
A degree in Automotive Technology, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Must have a valid driver's license.
A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License preferred.
Must have and maintain an excellent motor vehicle record.
ASE certifications in school bus, heavy truck and/or transit bus preferred.
Experience with shop labor relations, preferred.
A current DOT certification preferred.
Comprehensive knowledge of diesel engines and/or internal combustion engines, propane engines, automatic transmissions, airbrakes, steering and drivelines.
Possess a basic understanding of the theory of electricity and also be able to read and understand wiring diagrams.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Working knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; and the ability to utilize automotive software and programs.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Broad understanding of all mechanical systems related to heavy duty transportation vehicles.
Familiarity with laws/regulations associated with the safe operation of maintenance facilities.
Ability to read, interpret and apply documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to read schematics, and other mechanical and/or electrical diagrams.
Ability to read and write routine reports, forms, and other documentation or correspondence.Ability to organize and perform work efficiently, strong attention to details.
Ability to work effectively with labor unions.
Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.

Physical Requirements:
The essential functions of this position require the ability to:
Work in an environment outside or inside exposed to varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions - work alone and in remote locations.
Occasionally stand, stoop, squat, and walk for extended periods of time; bend, kneel, or crouch to files or equipment stored at ground level; use hands and fingers to handle small parts, push buttons; and use hands, arms, legs and feet to climb ladders and stairs.
Sit or stand for extended periods (up to 6-8 hours per day); frequently walk for long distances and on possible sloped ground, or slippery and uneven surfaces.
Must lift 50 lbs. from floor to bus, lift/carry 15 lbs. up to 100'; push and pull objects up to 50 lbs. up to 8', torque 100 lbs. wheel lugs; occasionally throughout the workday; lift material weighting up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance; and move the steering wheel and operate pedals freely while seated in bus seat.
Withstand heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job; tolerate exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise.
