The Physical Therapist II is assigned to the Northeast Region of DDS’ Regional Evaluation and Assessment for Community Habitation (REACH) Clinic to provide consultative direct and indirect clinical evaluation services. The position includes travel in personal vehicle through the Northeast Region. The Physical Therapist II evaluates the physical therapy needs of developmentally delayed individuals and individuals with acquired brain injuries with potentially aggressive behaviors, acute psychiatric needs and fragile medical and physical conditions. This position conducts hands on evaluation procedures, determines need for and procures assistive equipment and oversee it’s repair at Hogan’s Assistive Technology Center.

This position facilitates and oversees the rehabilitation and/or maximal functioning of individuals with physical disabilities.

This position is part of an interdisciplinary clinical team to ensure safe and supportive environments of individuals in the community that we serve through the REACH program.

The Physical Therapist is part of an interdisciplinary team and attends meetings and clinics. He/She will work with clinicians to apply assistive devices and provide training to ensure that equipment is used properly and safely.

In order to ensure a continuum of care, the physical therapist coordinates programs with other disciplines to assure optimal use or resources. The physical therapist communicates with staff, families and colleagues regarding changes, progress and equipment needs.

  • Performs evaluations of patient problems by using the following: testing joint Range of Motion (ROM) and mobility, skeletal muscle strength, posture and gait, coordination, respiratory status, sensation and sensory perception, reflexes and muscle tone, orthotic and prosthetic fit and function, assistive technology fit and function.

  • Recommends appropriate equipment for safe and effective transfers, mobility devices including crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs, fire evacuation devices, and training in the use of orthotic-prosthetic and other assistive devices to maximize patients function.

  • Confers with medical staff personnel through meetings, conferences and written reports in order to integrate Physical Therapy with other medical disciplines.

  • Attends individual patient discharge planning meetings, team meetings and performs home Safety visits if necessary to coordinate post-hospital care.

  • Provides written reports of evaluation visits and writes Letters of Medical Neccessity for assistive technology acquisition through medical insurances. Works closely with vendors on specific equipment selection

  • Participates in Physical Therapy Clinical Education programs by supervising affiliating students.

A criminal background check (CORI) will be completed on the recommended candidate as required by the regulations set forth by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services prior to the candidate being hired. In addition, Chapter 234 of the Acts of 2014, An Act Requiring National Background Checks, requires the Department of Developmental Services to conduct fingerprint-based check of the state and national criminal history databases on the recommended candidate. Schedule Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the individuals we service.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a physical therapist.

Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Physical Therapist license issued by the Massachusetts Division of Licensure Board of Allied Health Professionals in accordance with Chapter 667 of the Acts of 1982.
