Job Summary
Reporting to the Clinical Nurse Manager, Operating Room with a line responsibility to the OR Charge Nurse, the RN First Assistant (RNFA) is a nursing professional qualified by experience and advanced training to provide care in the perioperative areas by functioning as the first assistant to the surgeon in the absence of a qualified physician assist. The RNFA functions under the direct supervision of and are interdependent with the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of practice in a stable surgical environment. Responsible for the assessment of the health status of the patient to develop an individualized plan of care.
Minimum Qualifications
· Education
o Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
o Completion of a recognized RNFA program required.
· Experience
o Must have prior experience as a nurse in a surgical environment.
o Previous experience as RNFA strongly preferred.
o Recommendations from two surgeons required.
· Licensure and/or Certification
o Current license as a registered nurse in Massachusetts required.
o CNOR certification required.
o BLS healthcare provider required.
o Qualifications as cited in AORN’s official statement of RNFA practice required.

o Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
