Summary

Home Base and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital seek a dynamic and eager Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellow for a full time position at Home Base. Home Base is an MGH and Red Sox Foundation program. Fellows will provide individual and group cognitive rehabilitation services to veterans and service members with TBI and PTSD at Home Base. This program is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard. This position offers the opportunity to practice in collaboration with other members of an interdisciplinary team, provide group instruction, educate patients, families and others.

Home Base Description: Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program, is dedicated to healing the invisible wounds of war for Veterans, Service Members and their Families through world-class clinical care, wellness, education and research. Home Base operates the first and largest private-sector clinic in the nation devoted to healing invisible wounds of war such as post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression, co-occurring substance use disorder, military sexual trauma, family relationship challenges and other issues associated with military service. Home Base currently employs approximately 125 individuals representing 95 FTEs. Recently the program consolidated into one patient-centered site in the Charlestown Navy Yard and moved to our new National Center of Excellence at the end of September 2018. The TBI and cognitive health services continue to grow at Home Base and this position would ensure that individual cognitive rehabilitation and group education is provided to patients to support this growth.

Key Responsibilities-General

  • Speech, language, cognitive-communicative skills are assessed according to organizational and professional guidelines.

  • Individually-tailored treatment plans reflect an understanding of patients’ age and situation including discharge plan.

  • Patient status is reassessed, and treatment plan is modified based on patient progress towards stated goals.

  • Diagnostic findings and patient performance is documented in treatment program.

  • Documentation is complete, timely and in accordance with facility and practice guidelines.

  • Accurate billing is prepared to reflect care provided to patients.

  • Speech Language Pathology and health care students are oriented, trained, and mentored to achieve stated performance expectations.

  • Performance improvement opportunities are identified and acted upon as appropriate to implement best practices.

  • Additional department, organization, or network activities are completed per established objectives.

Responsibilities Home Base

  • Provide individual treatment for adult patients with post-concussive syndrome and traumatic brain injury

  • Provide treatment in the areas of cognitive-communication skills

  • Provide educational information sessions on cognitive rehabilitation

  • Lead cognitive based groups for patients and families

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings

  • Position Duration: This is a 1 year position with an option for the fellow to discontinue early once the requirements of the fellowship are met (36 weeks/1260 hours), should it be mutually agreed upon by the fellow and the Home Base and Spaulding clinical leadership._

Qualifications

Education/Degree

Required

  • Master’s Degree in Communication Disorders from an ASHA accredited university program required.

Licensure/Certification

Required

  • Meet educational requirements for certification or is completing Clinical Fellowship Year.

Experience

Preferred

  • Placements with the adult population

  • Experience with post-concussive syndrome and mild TBI

  • Experience leading groups

  • Basic understanding of neuropsychology and mental health disorders

Skills (Specific learned activity gained through training (e.g. computer skills, keyboarding, presentation, CPR, ACLS, etc.)

Required

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the English language.

  • Basic skills in math and computer science.

  • Appropriate knowledge of speech language evaluation and treatment techniques to manage the rehabilitation population.

  • Effective problem-solving skills for speech language evaluation, interpretation, treatment planning and execution taking into consideration patient’s age, psychosocial, cultural, and religious background.

  • Basic skills in teaching other and self-assessment of learning needs, strengths, and professional goals.

  • Safely execute all job responsibilities without risking injury to self or patients. Demonstrates the ability to assess and interact with patients and families using the theories of human growth and development, family systems, and cultural background.

  • Computer proficiency required. Microsoft office applications preferred with ability to learn new software.

  • Maintain variable work schedule depending on hospital/program needs to provide patient care (evening, holidays, weekend and travel).

  • Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, working with diverse population.

  • Work independently, be self-directed and contribute as a member of a team.

  • Anticipates challenges and develops and implements strategies for addressing them.

  • High level of service delivery. Demonstrate initiative with ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and adapt to changing situations.

  • Attention to detail.
