State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse IV in Canton, Massachusetts

Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC), operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic registered nurse to serve as dedicated Supervisor for the safe and effective provision of nursing care for PRCH during the overnight shift. The selected candidate will perform a variety of duties to determine a primary course of action for medical and other emergencies/unusual situations, which occurs during time on duty, consistent within the framework of existing policy. The Supervisor is responsible for identifying and responding to administrative issues as appropriate. This position receives general supervision from the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), who provides policy guidance, review, performance and reports for effectiveness and compliance with professional standards, agency policy and physician’s instructions. The incumbent must always exercise independent judgment and decision-making to effective in this role. /_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_/ * Provides direction and support to direct care nursing staff and supervises the nursing care and treatment of patients on all units, ensuring accurate reporting and recording. * Offers psychosocial support and primary nursing care to patients by assessing health status of patients, documenting related health data, administering standard nursing treatment, evaluating patient’s conditions, and adjusting care in conjunction with other providers. * Identifies, evaluates, and responds to changes in patients’ conditions and reports findings to appropriate healthcare personnel. * Ensures assessment of patient needs is completed on a regular basis and communicated to the team. * Evaluates nursing activities by reviewing patient charts, observing care, and visiting patients; ensures nursing care is carried out as directed, and treatment is administered in accordance with physician’s instructions. * Supports the involvement of nursing staff and leaders in the development of patient and family education programs. * Authorizes transportation of patients to other health care facilities in emergency situations. * Supports interdisciplinary team meetings and other programs that help patients and families develop necessary skills, knowledge, and behaviors. * Informs Nurse Manager of all aspects of day to day clinical and administrative operation of assigned area; Identifies long range planning goals and strategies needed in order to achieve departmental objectives. * Serves as the point of contact and decision-maker for the facility in the absence of senior management staff; notifies senior management staff of situations and seeks direction as appropriate. * Makes routine rounds and inspections relative to the care and treatment of patients and general condition of all areas of the facility. * Participates in seminars, workshops, conferences, and staff meetings to maintain professional proficiencies and/or licensure. /_Required Qualifications:_/ * Knowledge of principles and practices of Nursing. * Ability to gather clinical information through observing and questioning individuals, examining, and reviewing patient charts, lab data and other documents * Skilled in empathizing with patients and communicating effectively. * Ability to display sensitivity and respect regarding a patients' cultural and religious preferences/needs. * Demonstrated ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing program requirements. * Capacity to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. /_Preferred Qualifications:_/ * Three (3) years medical/surgical experience. * Demonstrated competency appropriate to the age of patients served. * Capacity to establish effective relationships with individuals, families, visitors, and medical staff. * Ability to deal effectively with staff conflict within nursing department, as well as to help successfully resolve interdisciplinary issues. * Cognitive and technical knowledge and the ability to progressively manage care delivery across the continuum of care. * Talent for promoting the accurate exchange of clinical information. * Collaborative with a wide variety of staff demonstrating personal initiative as well as the ability to work well in a team setting. /_Agency Mission:_/ Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) located in Canton, MA is a Joint Commission Accredited, 90 bed pediatric hospital predominately serving children and young adults (ages 8–22) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
