    Job Description

TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE II, Biological Engineering (BE), to join the laboratory of Dr. Linda Griffith (https://lgglab.mit.edu/) , a major focus of which is building human “organs-on-chips” to model liver metabolic diseases, gut/microbiome, and chronic infection (Lyme and tick-borne diseases), some of which involve human patient specimens and working with stem cells and tissue engineering; and collaborating on building models of liver metabolic diseases. A major aspect of these approaches is using 3D hydrogel materials developed in-house and customized for each cell culture application and custom microfluidic devices, built in-house. Will support a diverse team developing 3D tissue models for humanizing drug development and integration of tissue structures into microfluidic organs-on-chips; set up and run bioreactor experiments, collect samples, run assays, and analyze data; maintain reagents/supplies; and ensure safety standards/procedures are followed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: B.S. in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline; four years’ experience working in academic research or industry in a tissue engineering or biology lab (may include undergraduate experience); six months’ experience with primary human hepatocytes, liver non-parenchymal, endothelial, immune cell culture, and mammalian cell culture, including primary hepatocytes and gut cells; experience with hydrogel preparation, cell encapsulation and membrane bioreactor operation for liver and gut cell culture; attention to detail; excellent record-keeping, organizational, time-management, planning, problem-solving, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills; initiative; ability to multitask, work collaboratively, and perform some independent research; and proficiency with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. PREFERRED: master’s degree; and experience with biochemical assays of hepatocyte function, basic biology laboratory methods (e.g., aseptic technique, mammalian cell culture, immunoassays, DNA and RNA isolation, colorimetric plate readers, microscopy, ELISAs, spectrophotometers), and other standard analytical equipment.
