SURGERY TECHNICIAN, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to work closely with facility veterinarians and animal care staff to provide exceptional animal care. Will provide technical assistance with anesthesia, surgical preparation, and nursing support in the DCM operating rooms; and provide clinical support in the DCM animal facilities for animals housed at MIT. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance and support for animal surgeries; monitoring laboratory animals before, during, and after surgeries; performing clinical treatments such as administering drugs, fluid therapy, and supportive care to convalescent animals as well as those that require ongoing medical treatment; performing daily clinical rounds to evaluate animals for signs of illness; assisting investigators with technical procedures such as sample collection, administration of drugs, and other services in a variety of laboratory animal species; assisting/performing euthanasia as necessary; and keeping pharmacy stocked and dispensing drugs to researchers. Will also perform administrate and housekeeping duties related to the functioning of the facility, including monthly billing, ordering supplies, and organizing and cleaning the surgical facility.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: a high school diploma or its equivalent; three years’ related experience; experience with animal handling and working with nonhuman primates; strong organizational, administrative skills, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills; and proficiency with MS Office. PREFERRED: experience working with multiple other large animal species; experience with the care of post-surgical animals; surgical and anesthesia training and experience with common large animal laboratory species, including nonhuman primates, swine, rabbits, etc.; LAT and CVT certification; and an undergraduate degree in animal science, biology, or related field.
