Job Description
SUPERVISOR FOR VETERINARY TECHNICAL SERVICES-LARGE ANIMAL, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to supervise and coordinate--under the direction of the manager--veterinary technical services in support of DCM and research activities, including assisting with and overseeing sample collection from animals, administration of treatments to animals, anesthesia and surgical support, and other in vivo research techniques. Will coordinate the efforts of and provide training to veterinary technicians who provide these services to investigators; serve as liaison between DCM and investigators using animals; supervise veterinary technicians to ensure competence in providing requested services and promoting compliance with federal and DCM/CAC guidelines; work with research investigators to determine optimal ways to complete research goals; work with other supervisors of veterinary technical services to ensure that veterinary technicians are proficient in the assessment of animal health and welfare, proper health records are being monitored and kept, SOP-dictated or veterinarian prescribed treatments are being administered effectively, and proper follow up is provided; supervise and coordinate technical support for all aspects of large animal program including pharmacy and surgical suite operations; manage schedule for the technicians and ensure adequate coverage for all technical requests and animal care; collaborate on scheduling, evaluating, and adjusting veterinary technicians’ work volume; coordinate all record-keeping; and provide training on advanced techniques along with staff veterinarians.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: two years’ applicable experience in a laboratory animal research or other veterinary setting, including experience training others; and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. PREFERRED: undergraduate degree in animal science, biology, or related field; animal handling and advanced-level technical experience working with large animals and/or NHPs; CVT or LAT certification; and supervisory experience.
