316171BR Job ID: 316171BR Job Description: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common genetic hematological disorder, accounting for over 305000 births in 2010, with millions of people currently affected across the globe, the majority in low and middle income countries. The condition can cause extreme pain, life-threatening infections and other complications such as stroke or loss of vision. The disease can interfere with many aspects of the patient’s life, including education, employment and psychosocial development resulting in significant socio-economic impact. The Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on leveraging the breadth of innovation and novel modalities in the development of breakthrough therapies for patients. The exploratory Disease Area X (DAx) department at NIBR is looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist to develop innovative, ground-breaking in vivo therapies for Sickle Cell Disease. DAx is a highly dynamic and collaborative drug discovery department that interfaces innovative biology, genetic engineering, gene and cell therapy platforms, genome analysis, different modalities with pre-clinical development and translational medicine. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Will assume a crucial role in the development of novel therapeutic concepts and will contribute at all stages of a project, from inception, early project validation, optimization, candidate selection and through to early clinical development of novel medicines for patients with sickle cell disease - Will work collaboratively with other specialists to develop project strategy, identify key drug discovery issues, propose and implement creative solutions, execute and guide teams to success and decision points. - He/she will conduct early research to develop in vivo targeted gene delivery strategies for Sickle Cell Disease \n\n\n\n Position Title: Research Scientist – Sickle Cell Disease, Hematology Minimum requirements: What You'll Bring to the Role: - The ability to work independently in experimental execution and data analysis - Experience performing mouse handling techniques, bleeding, and injection procedures related to HSC research - Proficiency in molecular cloning, sequence and protein analyses, and real-time PCR; cell culture, transfection and transduction methods and flow cytometry analyses of blood lineages; Proficiency in using viral and non-viral based gene transfer methods - Experience in ex vivo/in vitro and in vivo systems to study HSC biology - Experience in characterization of gene function using murine models - Experience in screening, identification, and characterization of small molecules and/or biologics - Possess in-depth knowledge of literature methodology, instrumentation and underlying principles of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology - Creative problem-solving skills; excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills. Desirable Requirements: - MS or equivalent in a scientific field such as biology, chemistry or pharmacology with appropriate and relevant years of experience, or BS with appropriate and relevant years of experience in drug discovery or other related laboratory research - Experience in a laboratory focused on hematopoietic stem cells - Enthusiasm for working in an interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment Why Consider Novartis? 769 million.
