Additional Information: In collaboration with the Chief of Medicine and the Internal Medicine Practice Manager, manages the daily clinical and nursing operations of the Department of Internal Medicine. Ensures appropriate staffing and service to support high quality patient care and the smooth functioning of the clinical unit. As part of a leadership team, serves as a clinical leader and manager for processes that support the care delivery system including policies, procedures, standards of care, and other relevant guidelines. Actively participates in quality improvement projects utilizing Lean methodologies. Key processes include customer service, risk and quality management, scheduling, staff management, creation, development, and implementation of clinical policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines, and training, and orientation. As a key member of the Department of Nursing leadership team, helps to guide nursing practice throughout the organization based on relevant and up-to-date research.

  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment

  • Responsible for the nursing plan of care of assigned patients in accordance with clinicians’ orders

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program

  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Registered Nurse license in Massachusetts

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

  • Ability to stand for extended periods

Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work nights and weekends

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates and enhances the delivery of patient care

  • Supports and implements the mission and vision of HUHS with measurable goals and objectives relative to Internal Medicine

  • Participates in evaluating and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support the delivery of patient care

  • Evaluates and makes recommendations about equipment used to care for patients

  • Operationalizes health care regulations, accreditation standards, and evidenced based practice in the daily clinical practice to assure high quality, safe patient care

  • Leads and participates in initiatives/projects to continually improve clinical processes, effective patient flow, and access to care

  • Fosters an interdisciplinary approach to patient care

  • Supervises nurse generalists and advance practice nurses to include recruiting, hiring, credentialing, orienting, training, and facilitating professional growth and development and manages the performance for each nursing professional in the department

  • Identifies patient and family education needs and collaborates to assure resources are available to patients, families, and clinicians to meet those needs

  • Assures that documentation of patient care is current, consistent, and meets HUHS standards. Oversees peer review for internal medicine nursing professionals.

  • Assists in developing, monitoring, and implementing performance and service standards utilizing Lean methodologies in collaboration with the Chief of Medicine and Practice Manager

  • Plans, organizes, and directs nursing practice at the unit level in accordance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, national practice guidelines, and HUHS standards for practice

  • Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates clinical policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines

  • Provides and analyzes data to improve performance and measure patient care outcomes

  • Identifies required clinical competencies and works with the Staff Development Coordinator to assure competencies are completed according to established timelines

  • Assesses professional development needs for direct reports and assists with identifying opportunities to meet goals and objectives related to those needs

  • Ensures environmental safety including infection control measures for each assigned unit

  • Contributes to planning and implementation of special programs such as flu immunization clinics and group travel clinics

  • Performs special projects as requested

  • Participates in and leads assigned committees/workgroups

  • Assures emergency preparedness of units through a defined plan, education, and appropriate practice

  • Assumes on call responsibilities as part of the management team

  • In collaboration with the Chief of Medicine and Practice Manager, participates in the budget process, monitoring, analyzing, and adjusting spending to meet the financial goals and objectives of the unit
