Under the general supervision of the Blood Bank Manager, the lead supports the training and education of staff and collects blood from outpatients, performs related technical, clerical, and administrative duties as needed. Assists in direct observation of staff for 6 elements of competency. Assists in writing and updating procedures and policies adherent to regulatory agencies.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collects blood specimens from outpatients using venipuncture techniques and following standard or prescribed methods and procedures.

  • Interfaces with the Laboratory sections in the timely expedition of specimen procurement and assures proper labelling and transport of the specimens.

  • Performs associated clerical duties such as data entry on both the hospital and laboratory computers.

  • Orients new personnel to assigned area by showing where supplies and policies are kept. Schedules new employee for computer training during first month of hire; observes blood drawing techniques to ensure consistency of phlebotomy procedures, gives feedback to supervisor. Communicates to new employee job specifications of assigned area.

  • Keeps schedule of employees and assignments up-to-date and clear to understand weekly.

  • Attempts to fill any sick call or "holes" in schedule by calling supervisor and other phlebotomists to help.

  • Assigns a stock schedule for area, ensuring that all phlebotomists have taken a turn on a monthly basis. Makes sure that the last phlebotomist to leave the area has checked that all samples have been taken to appropriate departments and that area is clean 100% of the time.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent with the ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions and have a basic knowledge of human anatomy.

  • Ability to develop technical skills and become familiar with policies and procedures. Need for general analytical skills to resolve minor conflicts and problems.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to interface with section staff, patients, physicians, and nursing staff in a professional manner.

  • Ability to manage area and maintain activities within assigned area.
