Sanofi Group Director / Senior Director, External Innovation, Cell Therapies in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Position Overview / Department Description:

Sanofi is seeking a Director / Senior Director, External Innovation, Cell Therapies to join the Business Development Team within its Partnering organization, based in Cambridge, MA. The mission of Partnering is to seek and execute external growth initiatives to address the Sanofi Group´s strategic priorities. This mission is fully supporting Sanofi´s strategic roadmap, specially aligned with the following strategic priorities: Reshape the portfolio and sustain innovation in R&D. The key activities of Business Development are the search, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and closing of strategic alliances with external entities, involving products and other product-related assets.

The External Innovation Team is responsible for leading the search, initial evaluation and contributing to the transactions for R&D opportunities and assets, in alignment with the Global Business Units. As Director / Senior Director of External Innovation, Cell Therapies, the individual will be expected to contribute to and provide leadership on the strategy and execution of the business development roadmap for the emerging field of cell therapy, and prioritization of activities. In addition to being a strong and trusted representative with external parties, the position requires accountability for close relationships and coordination with Partnering colleagues and stakeholders in the Genomic Medicines Unit (GMU) and Therapeutic Areas (TA). The position is intended to be a key enabler and accelerator of Sanofi’s corporate dedication to the establishment of life-changing advanced cell therapy products.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and lead prioritization of global search and evaluation activities, with the goal of leveraging our global reach to identify the best opportunities regardless of source

  • Externally, expand and leverage the ecosystem of academics, VCs, biotechs and others to propose innovative technology approaches to the RP, aligned with their priorities. The incumbent will develop strong relationships with external stakeholders to proactively access and progress gap-filling opportunities

  • Internally, proactively work closely with the GMU to appreciate, understand, prioritize, and map gaps and needs, as it relates to external related innovation objectives. When appropriate, work closely with External Innovation leads for specific TA to align early-stage technology opportunities with specific therapeutic needs

  • Maintain and drive a portfolio of innovative cell therapy opportunities. The incumbent will exercise their knowledge of technologies, therapeutic targets and the discovery and development processes to judiciously triage opportunities and prioritize them for presentation to stakeholders and for funding

  • With the Business Development (BD) team and GMU, provide leadership and contribute to prioritization of external opportunities, based on, for example, strategic fit, strength of the science and overall business case

  • With the deal team, provide input and guidance on optimal deal structure from a technical/scientific perspective, aligning the business terms with key inflection points, thereby minimizing contractual risk

  • Contribute to and ensure delivery on team and individual goals and measures (KPIs) consistent with the group expectations, including accountability for tracking, reporting and communicating progress on our External Innovation portfolio

  • Work closely with the Transaction group, Legal, Finance, IP etc. to put in place contracts to leverage these opportunities.

  • Provide leadership on specific programs from the start of the evaluation through the governance process and to the start of due diligence. Work closely with the deal and assessment teams to build and maintain aggressive and realistic project management timelines, roles and responsibilities through the end-to-end process

  • Represent Sanofi at suitable external conferences and events, be a Sanofi ambassador to the external scientific and biotech communities

  • Reporting structure will be tailored to match the experience and seniority of the incumbent

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a PhD in Biological Sciences is required

  • A minimum 12 years of relevant work experience in biotech/pharma industry. Experience in advanced therapeutic modalities (cell or gene therapy) is required

  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of additional languages (French and/or German) a plus

Core competencies:

  • Ability to deliver results when working in transverse, cross-­‐functional, cross-cultural teams with matrix reporting relationships is required

  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external senior executives is required

  • Ability to influence peers and seniors to make difficult choices and trade-offs is required

  • Experience in representing company/institution at partnering and technical conferences

  • Candidates should possess a strong domestic and international external network in relevant fields, via academia, biotechs and VCs

  • Candidates should have formal experience in the deal execution process, in particular the search and evaluation process.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, able to work to agreed timelines with a focus on execution and implementation

  • Ability to combine an understanding of science and technologies with business considerations and commercial and financial models

  • Ability to function in a dynamic environment with rapidly changing activities and priorities

  • Ability to develop, contribute to, communicate and act on a strategic vision and plan

  • Strong judgment, problem-solving, conflict-resolution and decision-making skills

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
