Must take initiative, be organized, be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadline requirements, work independently and work as part of a team. Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail, are required. Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills.Additional Information:Candidate is required to participate in 24-hour emergency response activities.

  • Work with laboratories to integrate safety into laboratory operations and promotes safe work practices based on regulatory requirements, best management practice guidance and University Policy.

  • Perform risk assessments of rDNA and biological research protocols, process applications for registration with the Harvard Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and act as a voting Biosafety Officer for the committee.

  • Conduct laboratory inspections and compliance reviews of laboratories (BL1 to BL3, in vitro and in vivo work with rDNA), research animal facilities, and other support facilities that use recombinant DNA technology and biological agents. Consult with Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on inspection findings and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practice guidance (including NIH Guidelines).

  • Review grant applications, animal experimentation protocols, and IBC applications.

  • Assist laboratory clients with identification of appropriate biological laboratory containment levels, and strategies for hazard assessment and control.

  • Maintain and update records of laboratory inspections, internal and external correspondence and investigations. Monitors completion of required tasks such as inspections, lab permit/registration renewals, regulatory filings and takes action (with School, EH&S and Labs) to complete in a timely manner.

  • Prepare and conduct training including biological safety, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, chemical, general, and physical protection in laboratories, hazardous materials shipping, and other customized trainings as needed.

  • Prepare, update, and draft policies, guidelines, and procedures for biological hazards and processes.

  • Assist in the response and investigation of laboratory-related accidents or exposures.

  • Collaborate with other EH&S divisions to implement multi-disciplinary programs including biological, chemical and physical hazard exposure monitoring, animal experimentation protocols, hazard communication and other program areas. Develop written plans, training modules, fact sheets and other communications.

  • Sample for air quality, biological, toxic and other hazards. Interprets sample/inspection results, makes decisions on findings, reports results to clients and maintain records. Use independent judgment to evaluate potential exposure to hazardous materials, physical hazards and/or conditions. Provide practical and feasible solutions to control exposures and ensures compliance with University guidelines, best management practices and occupational and environmental regulations.

  • Participate in special projects and assist in the provision of EH&S services as requested.

  • Maintain proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in biological safety and environmental health and safety; with guidance from the Associate Director of Biosafety, anticipate and evaluate their impact on clients; communicate requirements to EH&S and client management.

  • Participate in special projects, either as part of a team or as an individual contributor.

  • Work collaboratively with Biosafety professionals from Harvard-affiliated institutions registered through the Committee on Microbiological Safety, and the IBC administrative office.

  • Maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with EH&S staff, Principal Investigators, researchers and clients while actively promoting a culture of safety.

  • Provide emergency response support (24 hour) throughout the University (on a rotating basis). Emergencies include: biological/blood spill, chemical/oil/waste release, personal injury, fire, etc.

    Job Summary:The Biosafety Officer is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Harvard University Biosafety and Laboratory Safety Programs at the Longwood campus in Boston, Massachusetts. This position is under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Safety & Biosafety and will perform duties in Biosafety and Laboratory Safety in a multi-disciplinary Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) environment with strong emphasis on research laboratory safety (biological and chemical safety, occupational safety & health, industrial hygiene and radiation protection). The primary purpose of this position is to provide services directly to the clients through field consultations, technical assistance, inspections, training, protocol review, data collection and analysis. This position also provides emergency response support on a team rotation basis. As a member of the EH&S team, this person works together with the Laboratory Safety staff to assist with the development of university-wide biosafety and lab safety programs.
