Wellforce SVP of Laboratory and Pathology Services in Burlington, Massachusetts
Provides strategic leadership direction and operational management oversight for Wellforce’s Pathology and Laboratory Program including the departments at each of the member entities. Assures the efficient and effective delivery of high-quality inpatient, outpatient, and outreach laboratory services.
Expected to continuously improve and optimize existing services through quality management, organizational structuring, job design and expense management. while continuing to identify opportunities to attract new business to the Wellforce laboratories.
Develops and manages appropriate strategic relationships for the delivery and expansion of laboratory services and also works collaboratively with the program Medical Directors to ensure optimal laboratory service delivery to patients and medical staff.
Clinical and Business Operations
Supervise and support all lab leaders and their staff to deliver the highest quality, customer-responsive, efficient lab services throughout Wellforce’s system. Continually improve quality and efficiency of laboratory systems to support superior clinical services to existing laboratory users.
Develop and support lab leaders and staff throughout the Wellforce system to create an environment that makes Wellforce labs the preferred place to work in our region.
Partner effectively with Pathologists to maximize quality, mutual respect, timely turnaround, and great customer service to referring providers and patients.
Partner with medical directors across the system to drive quality improvements and standardization over time, including equipment, test menus, send-out lab management, etc.
In conjunction with the facility lab management teams, develop and implement the most efficient and effective laboratory services through consolidation and/or centralization of services as appropriate. Develop and support common standard operating procedures, evaluate and optimize vendor/supplier relationships.
Develop and support centralized outreach services.
Build strong teams of professionals and improve management bench strength.
Support the implementation and ongoing success of the EPIC system.
Standardize technologies across the system where appropriate
Develop and implement the goals and objectives of Wellforce Laboratory Program that align with Wellforce system goals in conjunction with the clinical and facility leadership. To develop these goals, the SVP must constantly monitor feedback from senior leadership, Medical Directors, physicians, clinical care teams and laboratory personnel.
Continually objectively assesses progress toward goals, adjusting operating plans as necessary.
In collaboration with local management and strategic planning department, identify opportunities for collaboration across Wellforce hospital laboratories to review existing and optimize inter-institutional programs.
In collaboration with Wellforce’s strategic planning/growth department, plan new services.
Collaborate with business development team to identify ongoing market opportunities to grow the Wellforce laboratory services
Monitor success of business initiatives
Create management reporting tools / dashboards to inform key collaborators
In conjunction with Wellforce and Laboratory Directors, prepare laboratory capital and operating budgets for lab. Monitor financials to assure that budgetary goals are met or beat, and deviations are adequately understood and appropriate action taken.
Evaluate laboratory services to maximize efficiency and reduce expense to owner institutions.
With Finance, establish and coordinate the transfer of expenses between affiliates as required for shared testing services. Interact with Wellforce finance executives and accountants to assure accurate, timely forecasts, budgets and financial reporting.
Partner with Wellforce Revenue Cycle team to assure appropriate revenue capture, and to develop/implement charge program for outreach programs.
Partner with leader of Wellforce Supply Chain to obtain optimal vendor contracts for lab supplies and equipment. Manage/optimize contracts to meet the quality, service and financial goals of Wellforce.
Provide input into laboratory charge description master.
Oversee the personnel management of all non-physician staff, which includes administration of payroll policies, benefits administration, staff recruitment and retention, position grading and compensation equity, enforcement of all Wellforce employee policies, disciplinary issues, etc.
Ensure high levels staff productivity and efficiency, while creating a work environment that recruits and retains the best talent.
Select, develop and evaluate managers who are responsible for developing and leading strong employee teams in order to meet the qualitative and quantitative and mission related goals established for the laboratory program.
Regulatory/Compliance/Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement
Provide leadership to the laboratories in a way that maximizes quality through the development and implementation of quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives; cost effectiveness through efficient and effective delivery of quality clinical services; and supports the program and operational needs of Wellforce through involvement and participation in program and service development in Wellforce hospitals.
Work collaboratively with the Medical Director(s) and pathologists to assure quality, timely and appropriate clinical services are provided to all patients.
Ensure that the Departments are in compliance with all applicable federal regulations regarding clinical or research operations (e.g. TJC, CAP, CLIA, DPH, OSHA, fire safety code, etc.). and all applicable regulatory agencies regarding billing compliance issues (e.g. CMS, OIG, etc.). Work with Wellforce Compliance Officers to develop and implement an effective compliance program.
Master’s of Health Administration, Master’s of Business Administration and an undergraduate degree in Laboratory Science or related science is required
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in clinical laboratory management is required. Experience in multi-facility clinic laboratory management as well as hospital laboratory business management experience is essential.
5 years’ experience in an academic medical center is preferred
Strong business acumen with a focus on laboratory operations and billing and an in-depth working knowledge of laboratory medicine and management.
Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
Working knowledge of electronic medical records and other IT systems and information networks/interfaces is necessary. Experience with EPIC is a plus.
Experience in and knowledge of vendor/contracting relationships.
