Working closely with the Chief Pharmacy the Director of Pharmacy Services oversees the management, quality, and advancement of Clinical Pharmacy services at LHMC. Oversees acute care decentralized staff, Pharmacy Residency Program Director and Residents, leads formulary management and stewardship and serves as a key member of the LHMC and BILH Pharmacy and Therapeutic committees. Provides educational and developmental opportunities for the pharmacy staff and students; maintains quality and fiscal responsibility through the implementation and maintenance of clinically- appropriate intervention/utilization programs; and is responsible for medication use evaluation programs to ensure appropriate, safe and cost effective medication therapy. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining and improving the quality and scope of pharmacy services provided by the Department.
Job Description:
Directly supervise decentralized clinical pharmacy staff.
Manage decentralized pharmacy practice of clinical pharmacists in the performance functions assuring quality provision of pharmacotherapy services.
Assures that work schedules, procedures, and assignments use pharmacy personnel and resources in the most efficient manner possible. Responsible for hiring process for employees, provision of disciplinary action and performance appraisals.
Performs annual performance appraisals. Assumes lead role in the content development of guidelines, policies and procedures, particularly those relating to decentralized services and clinical pharmacy programs. Ensures completion of monthly nursing unit inspections. Serves on system, hospital and pharmacy committees and as needed.
Ensures that there are sufficient professional and technical support personnel to meet pharmacy department needs. Ensures that all pharmacy personnel possess the education and training needed for their responsibilities and that competence of all staff is maintained through hospital training and programs and continuing education programs.
Provides procedures and upkeep for a department orientation program and evaluates personnel during the yearly review process unless earlier indicated by Human Resources policy and procedures. Works to prepare and monitor reports required by hospital committees as needed. Along with management team, ensures compliance with relevant standards of practice with relevant standards and guidelines such as but not limited to the Joint Commission, State and Federal regulations and American Society of Health System Pharmacists.
Works with other members of the pharmacy management team and hospital (e.g. nursing, physicians other ancillary staff) to help create, implement and ensure policies and procedures governing the procurement, distribution, and control of all drugs used within the institution is in compliance with applicable state and federal laws.
Oversees assigned staff. Ensures that job descriptions are accurate and up to date; responsible for timely completion of Performance Appraisals and Competency Assessment; oversight for colleague time away, overtime and shift work and in partnership with Human Resources ensures that policies and procedures are followed.
Facilitates ongoing development of support staff. Issues corrective action when necessary, Develops, manages and monitors results of the Medication-use Optimization and Standardization. Areas include: Clinical Interventions Program; Pharmacoeconomic considerations of drug therapy selection/utilization with potential development of treatment algorithms; Drug Information Service; Medication Reliability.
Identifies, creates and implements clinical pharmacy program short- and long-term goals, in coordination with senior pharmacy leadership and with alignment to LHMC and BILH clinical goals. Responsible for development, implementation, administration, and quality assessment of new pharmacy policies and procedures related to clinical programs in collaboration with the senior pharmacy leadership.
Directly responsible for overseeing the activities of the Colleges of Pharmacy preceptors. Oversight and developing the accredited ASHP Residency program and the residents. Works closely with the LHMC Pharmacy and Therapeutics P&T Committee Chair to develop agenda and implement P&T decisions.
Participates as needed on the BILH P&T Committee and sub-committees and works closely with system and local committees to successfully implement approved policies, procedures, guides and programs. Collaborates with other clinicians and allied health professionals within BILH to develop practice standards and therapeutic algorithms.
Participates in LHMC Research and works closely with the IRB and Manager of Pharmacy Research to ensure approved protocols are implemented successfully Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities.
Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Assists in planning, monitoring and/or managing budget in functional area of department.
Partner with the pharmacy purchasing and contracting manager, pharmacy purchaser(s) and medication safety and drug policy pharmacist to manage recalls, backorders, and withdrawal of medications from the market, including communication to affected caregivers. Along with the pharmacy purchasing manager lead the hospitals shortage committee.
In concert with the pharmacy management team, develop yearly performance evaluation template. Serve as preceptor during hospital pharmacy practice experience. Assist the management team in meeting the goals and objectives of the department of pharmacy services. Perform pharmacy staffing duties if needed based on department needs.
Act as a pharmacy administrator on call Provide order entry assistance based on department need. Additional responsibilities as assigned by the CPO.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education :
BS in Pharmacy or PharmD; graduate from an accredited college of pharmacy.
Licensure, Certification & Registration :
State of Massachusetts Licensed Pharmacist or eligible
Experience :
Minimum of 5 years direct clinical pharmacy patient care activities.
Minimum of five years of clinical pharmacy management experience preferred.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities :
· Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
· Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
· Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.
· Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
· Ability to design and implement systems necessary to collect, maintain and analyze data.
· Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to the disbursement of pharmaceutical drugs.
· Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
· Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
· Ability to perform basic patient assessments and referrals.
· Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
· Understands the principles of Driving the Business.
· Possesses skills in empowering the employees to practice teamwork and Lahey Guiding Principles.
