Position Summary : Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with the Associate Chief for the Center for Clinical and Professional Development, the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, the clinical educator practices within the Lahey Clinic Professional Practice Model, MA Nurse Practice Act, ANA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics and demonstrates Lahey Clinic’s core values that reflect its Mission. The Clinical Educator promotes excellence in nursing practice by providing expert nursing care to patients and functions as a clinical/educational resource to nursing staff. The nurse-patient/family relationship, continuity of care and accountability are central to the delivery of individualized high quality patient care.
The Clinical Educator facilitates the coordination of care across the continuum and demonstrates safe practice within the domains of:
Clinical judgment and decision making
The Clinical Educator provides direct and indirect care to patients in collaboration with other health care team members. The Clinical educator maintains a current level of knowledge and skill with technical procedures as defined by nursing specialty organization complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies and is currently licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a registered nurse.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
Clinical Judgment and Decision Making: Ways in which nurses come to understand the problems, issues or concerns of patients/families, to attend to salient/critical information, and to respond in concerned and involved ways.
Facilitates the nursing process (as outlined in the Tertiary RN job description):
Providing safe patient care -Demonstrates organizational skills that maintain safe delivery of standard care for assigned patients/families.
Performing systematic patient and family assessment relevant to practice settings.
Evaluating effectiveness of care and adapts plan based on patient/family response.
Effectively communicating plan of care and patient/family response
Collaborates with staff nurses on the assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and documentation of nursing care.
Performs routine rounds to observe the delivery of care and to offer guidance to staff, especially for complex or difficult patient problems.
Provides the staff with available resources and information to improve patient care outcomes as well as to develop their skills.
Collaborates with nurses in coordinating patient teaching as well as discharge planning.
Improves nursing practice by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient outcomes and standards of care.
Works with Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager and staff nurses to plan, implement and evaluate changes in practice on each unit.
Develops unit-based standards of practice/protocols, which are compatible with the philosophy and goals of the Nursing Department.
Educates nurses about standards of practice/protocols.
Coordinates and implements unit based nursing education on new or revised policies, procedures, products and equipment.
Participates in hospital and nursing committees
Develops and monitors continuous improvement initiatives on the unit.
Assures maintenance of educational files, bulletin boards and literary resources for the unit
Promotes excellence in nursing practice by providing expert nursing care to patients and functioning as a clinical resource to nursing staff
Guides and instructs staff in their role as direct caregivers Evaluates nursing practice to provide clinical learning opportunities for staff. Assist staff to incorporate evidence-based knowledge into their daily nursing practice.
Nurse-patient/family relationship: A relationship that extends beyond formal assessment to integrate the particular patient’s response and his/her religious/spiritual, ethnic and cultural beliefs into the plan of care.
Facilitates the establishment of a professional relationship with patient and family. Communicates RN role to patient and family Elicits questions and concerns from patient and family members. Orients patient/family to the roles of each member of the health care team and unit environment. Respects the values (religious/spiritual, ethnic, cultural ) of the patient and family. Communicates with the patient and family appropriate to the age of the patient and family members. Presents patient/family values to other members of the health care team. Maintains confidentiality and patient rights in interactions with the patient/family and other health care workers. Inform patients of their rights as a patient. Teaches the patient and family about the patient’s illness and treatment including preventative measures appropriate to the patient.
Elicits questions and concerns from patient and family members.
Teaches self care procedures appropriately.
Communicates about the plan of care and any changes as they occur.
Provides information and teaches skills regarding prevention and wellness as appropriate to practice setting.
Facilitates the nurse/nurse relationship: Assist the newly licensed nurse to make a successful transition to role ad RN and Lahey clinic Actively involved in strategies that promote the image of nursing Actively participates in recruitment and retention of registered nurses

Uses resource manuals and professional journals to assist with integrating evidence-based practice into nursing care. Seeks guidance from appropriate unit resources and setting-based experts. Is knowledgeable about current performance improvement activities and measurement data of unit and new product initiatives. Demonstrates skills as a responsive team member.

Works with Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager and staff nurses in determining educational programs for the unit.
Develops and implements unit based educational programs as a result of annual unit-based educational needs assessment
Participates in the development and presentation of hospital wide educational programs.
Develops and implements orientation schedules and programs for new staff members.
Reviews current research findings to determine if pertinent to unit practice setting.
Evaluates, counsels and documents the competency and performance of nursing staff.
Works with ANM to assure attendance at educational offerings
Serves as resource for students from affiliated schools of nursing and allied health.
Provide support to nursing staff so they may serve as preceptors for student role.
Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles , Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.

Education: Master of Science, Nursing or equivalent advanced degree in health related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience in order to have full understanding of Nursing Education functions.
Licensure, Certification & Registration : Current license to practice professional nursing from the Massachusetts Board of Registration.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or (ACLS) instructor certification.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Requires knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of Board of Registration approved nursing education program located within the United States or as certified by the Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) in order to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
Experience: 5 years current, relevant nursing experience is required. An additional 1-3 years of training and education experience is required, preferrably in a healthcare setting.
